Andy Murray is racing to be fit for Wimbledon after sustaining a back injury at the Queen’s Club Championship last week. In what will be Murray’s final career SW19, tennis legend Mats Wilander has a strong hunch that the British player will play in the tournament if he is 90% fit.
The three-time Grand Slam champion won his first Wimbledon in 2013 and again in 2016. However, since returning from hip surgery in 2019, he has struggled with several injuries in his career. This season he sustained his second injury at the Queen’s Championship during his match against Australia’s Jordan Thompson.
Murray revealed that it was a nerve-type discomfort in his back, which caused a loss of control and strength. He underwent surgery for a cyst on his spinal cord on Saturday, which will take him days for proper rehabilitation. Notwithstanding, the British star has two major tournaments next month and is hoping to play in both.
He will have until Friday to decide if he will play at Wimbledon. But, Mats Wilander admits he will play even if it will be the last tournament of his career.
I think that if your name is Andy Murray; you look at the state of affairs and you say to yourself that you have a chance of appearing well on the list. this Wimbledon, as he did last year (defeat in five sets against Tsitsipas in the 2nd round). I think Andy Murray will run if he's 90% healthy. Especially if it is the last tournament of his career.Mats Wilander said via Eurosport
Murray is already back in training, but his decision on his fitness for Wimbledon would be the most decisive move he will make in his final career Tour. Should he compete and lose in the opening round or give another player his place, is up to him.
Andy Murray reveals he will access the risk of playing Wimbledon after a successful back surgery
The 37-year-old’s team is finding necessary measures not to risk his return from injury with another injury. Additionally, Andy Murray has revealed that he will access if he is willing to take the risk of playing at Wimbledon after a successful surgery.
The British star is hoping to play in what has been reported to be his final Wimbledon. He will be remembered for being the first British man to win the title in 77 years.
It's whether or not I'm willing to take on that risk. But also even with there potentially being a risk, I've obviously had the operation and the operation has gone really, really well.Andy Murray said via BBC
Furthermore, Murray will be playing in his final Olympics in Paris this summer. He is a two-time gold medalist at the Games, winning his first at the London 2012 and then at Rio 2016.
