Nick Kyrgios is one of the few players on the Tour who combines skills on the court with charisma off the court. But, his charisma has often overwhelmed his talent in fans’ view. However, that cannot be said for tennis legend Mats Wilander, who believes the Aussie can win the 2025 Australian Open.
Kyrgios recently announced that he will be returning to the tour next year after being away from the court for more than fifteen months. The 29-year-old has played one match since the start of 2023 and has undergone three surgeries. He is set to make his comeback at the Brisbane International which starts on December 29.
The former World No.13 will also play alongside Novak Djokovic in the doubles of the competition. This will act as a warm-up tournament ahead of the 2025 Australian Open. It will be the first time the Aussie will compete in a Grand Slam tournament since the 2022 US Open. He is also set to play alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis in the doubles at Melbourne.
The closest Kyrgios has come to winning a Grand Slam was at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship final, where he lost to Djokovic. Mats Wilander shared his take on Kyrgios having the “chance to do it all.”
Kyrgios will first play in the World Tennis League exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi which starts on December 19. The mixed-team event has attracted the likes of Simona Halep, Casper Ruud, and Aryna Sabalenka.
Mats Wilander reveals it will be interesting to see how Jannik Sinner will react to Nick Kyrgios’ plans
For the past few weeks, Nick Kyrgios has remained critical of Jannik Sinner’s doping saga. The Italian twice tested positive for clostebol in March but was exonerated of any punishment by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). Recently, he revealed that if he plays Sinner at the Australian Open, he will seek means to disrupt the match.
His statement has, in fact, made a former British No.1 advise him not to throw his respect out the window. Mats Wilander revealed during the aforementioned conversation that it would be interesting to see how Sinner would react.
Sinner and Kyrgios have met only once on the court but that happened at the 2022 Miami Open, with the former winning in straight sets. It will exciting to see if they meet for the second time at the 2025 Australian Open.
