Former World No.1 Mats Wilander has predicted that Emma Raducanu will not win a Grand Slam soon, despite being in her best form since 2021. The 22-year-old has shown a lot of significant improvement in her game in recent months, which also saw her almost beat World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in Cincinnati.
The British star’s rise to form began at the Miami Open, where she reached the quarter-finals of a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time in her career. Before the tournament, she had only won three matches, but since March, she has claimed 21 wins on tour. Last month, she reached the semi-finals of the Washington Open before losing to Anna Kalinskaya.
She then reached the third round of the Canadian Open and continued with the momentum at the Cincinnati Open. At Cincinnati, she faced Sabalenka in the third round and won the second set after losing the first in a tiebreak. Raducanu fought hard in the third set and had the chance of winning it but eventually lost to the three-time Grand Slam winner – 6(3)-7, 6-4, 6(5)-7.
She will be heading to the US Open singles event with her head held high as this year marks the fourth anniversary of her remarkable win at the tournament. The British No.1 came through qualifying at Flushing Meadows and won her first Grand Slam title without dropping a single set throughout the event.
Nonetheless, Mats Wilander, who joined the Eurosport broadcasting team at the US Open ahead of the mixed doubles, revealed via Tennis365 that despite her obvious improvement on the court, he’s not confident that she will win a Grand Slam any time soon:
Obviously, she’s stronger physically at 22 than she was at 18. Mentally, I’m not sure. I think mentally is the big question. Is she confident enough that she can overpower some of these players because obviously Sabalenka and Iga are bringing a different level than the players that she beat at the US Open four years ago. I don’t think we can look at Emma Raducanu and say that she has another Grand Slam victory in her yet.
The two strong favorites to win the US Open women’s singles title are Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek. The former is the defending champion, while the latter has been in excellent form since the Wimbledon Championship. Meanwhile, Raducanu will face a tough draw at the tournament as she failed to be seeded.
Mats Wilander reacts to Emma Raducanu’s new partnership with Rafael Nadal’s ex-coach
Emma Raducanu has been criticized in the past for splitting with coaches after a few months together. She has worked with more than seven coaches since winning the US Open 2021. Recently, she began a new partnership with Rafael Nadal’s ex-coach, Francisco Roig, ahead of the Cincinnati Open.

She had collaborated with Andy Murray’s ex-coach Mark Petchey since the Miami Open in March, but that was temporary. Their partnership ended after Wimbledon. Reacting to her new coach during the broadcast mentioned above, Mats Wilander blamed her for having too many coaches in just four years on tour:
She got injured straight away, and she’s had wrist operations, she’s had operations in a lot of places, and she hasn’t been able to play. So I think that we have to put her in a different situation. But as a general thing, yes, I think that you should keep your coach. If you had success as a 17, 18-year-old, 19-year-old with one coach, you should keep that coach for at least three or four more years to see how far you can get with that coach.
Raducanu was in action at the revamped US Open mixed doubles event alongside her partner Carlos Alcaraz. The pair exited in the first round of the tournament after losing to Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula in straight sets.
