Mats Wilander reveals why Tallon Griekspoor “wasn’t enough” against Alexander Zverev as the World No.4 narrowly escapes losing to him in Roland Garros R3

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev was in the news today for multiple reasons. It was the day when his open trial for a domestic abuse case was scheduled. The German didn’t need to attend the court proceedings as he remained focused on Roland Garros. However, it did seem that the distractions off the court affected his performance today as he struggled against 26th seed Tallon Griekspoor.
The German was on the brink of exiting the clay slam. However, he managed to come back from a double break down in the final set to win 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(3). After the match, eyebrows were raised more at Griekspoor’s poor playing attitude rather than Zverev’s performance.
Eurosport presenter Mats Wilander criticized the Dutch player’s body language in the final set. He said that the 26th seed took his foot off the pedal when he was a double break up in the deciding set.
Not great attitude in the end, he was looking at his coach and laughing and shaking his head, but he was up and break and serving so it was kind of weird. It shows that he hasn’t been there enough and the moment just got to him in the end. But he must realise he’s a great player, he’s nearly as good as the best players in the worldMats Wilandar said on Eurosport.
Zverev is on an 8-match winning streak, which includes his earlier success at the Italian Open last month. He defeated 14-time Roland Garros champion Rafael Nadal in the first round and then comfortably eased past David Goffin in the second round.
Alexander Zverev emerges as the heavy favorite to challenge Novak Djokovic in the first half of the draw
Three-time semi-finalist Alexander Zverev advanced to the last 16 of the French Open after a tense five-set battle against Tallon Griekspoor, the 26th seed from the Netherlands. Despite being down for the majority of the 5th set, the German fourth seed showed immense grit to make it to the Round of 16.
This win came shortly after a domestic abuse case involving Zverev began in Berlin. The Olympic champion, who denies the allegations made by his former girlfriend, does not need to attend the court proceedings and has stayed in Paris for the tournament.
At 27 years old, Zverev is considered one of the favorites to win the Coupe des Mousquetaires and capture his first Grand Slam title. Before the tournament, he stated that the case was “not on my mind” and did not comment further after winning his first two matches in straight sets.
Without a doubt, the biggest hurdle between him and the French Open trophy will be Novak Djokovic. The German is in Nole’s half and the two are projected to meet in the semifinals. Djokovic himself hasn’t been in his best form which will help Zverev’s case. In the fourth round, the 4th seed will face Holger Rune, the 13th seed on Monday.
