The Chicago Bears knew playing against the league leading Detroit Lions at their home was going to be tough. But Caleb Williams and his teammates staged a spirited comeback to at least try. But head coach Matt Eberflus made an inexplicable decision that ended up with them going home empty-handed.

32 seconds were on the clock when Caleb Williams was brought down by the Lions defense. Then the clock continued to tick down as the rookie QB motioned to his teammates about the next play. Then, with six seconds left, the QB snapped the ball and took all of the remaining seconds to set his feet and threw the ball.

In all that time, which seemed like an eternity, Matt Eberflus did not call a timeout. A decision that appalled commentators, fans as well as former players watching the game. All of them echoed that had the Bears called that one remaining timeout, they could have tied the game with a field goal. But the HC thought differently.

We were outside the field range, so we needed to get a few more yards in there. As close as we can get, and they were gonna call timeout. And that’s why we held that last timeout at the end of the game…. I like what we did there…. I think we handled it the right way.

Matt Eberflus said at the post-game press conference

The 54-year-old head coach reiterated that they had a plan to call the timeout, but as it was not executed perfectly, they did not call it. He seemingly suggested that it was his rookie QB’s fault for messing up their entire plan. More importantly, he went as far as to say that he was happy with their decision in this 6th straight loss.

Former NFL star calls out Matt Eberflus’ gaffe

Former NFL star and current ESPN analyst Damien Woody has played under the great Bill Belichick. He has also witnessed head coaches of all kinds throughout his career, both as a player and an analyst. Woody had made it clear that the no-timeout-call was horrendous. But after hearing the post-game presser, he had some more things to say.

What was that, Matt Eberflus? Of all the gaffe’s that we’ve seen from you and the Chicago Bears, that one may be the most pitiful, and might have cost you your job. I don’t know if this man is going to be on the flight going back to Chicago.

He and football fans saw the Chicago Bears mess it up at the end of the game. Damien Woody saw Eberflus miss a full 32 seconds’ worth of timeout taking opportunities. Then, to give that explanation at the press conference was over the top.

The two-time Super Bowl champion does not expect Matt Eberflus to remain in the job for much longer. With fan frustrations, losing the locker room and now being an embarrassment on Thanksgiving, everything points to the fact that it might be over.
