Matt Eberflus became the third head coach fired in the 2024-25 NFL season following the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints. The Jets parted ways with Robert Saleh while the Saints bid adieu to Dennis Allen.

The Chicago Bears are 4-8 through thirteen weeks of the season, with less than a one-percent chance of making the playoffs. Their Thanksgiving Day clash against the Lions ended in a shocking divisional loss. Despite rallying late to catch up after trailing most of the game, poor clock management by head coach Matt Eberflus in the final moments proved costly and potentially game-changing.

Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams and other players like DJ Moore didn’t shy away from pointing out the misstep. Social media quickly erupted with calls to “Fire Matt Eberflus” even before the post-game press conferences wrapped up.

Despite being shown the door, Matt Eberflus will still be paid close to 20,000 dollars a day for the next 2 plus years. In the NFL, the coaching contracts offer guaranteed money unless there are some salacious reasons to cite in the “for clause.”

Eberflus, who joined the Bears in 2022 has the worst winning percentage since 2022. After the Detroit Lions game, the coach has a margin of 5-19. Given that he was signed till 2026 with around 6 million a year, it is speculated that the Bears will end up with around 18 million considering Eberflus is unemployed. Here’s one of the latest calculations breaking down the amount owed.

  • $13.32 per minute
  • $799 per hour
  • $19,178 per day
  • $134,615 per week
  • $583,333 per month

The morality and functioning of the guaranteed money have come under fire once again with the latest Eberflus news. Last year, Micah Parsons had called out the same when the Las Vegas Raiders fired Josh McDaniels. It was then estimated the LV Raiders would have to pay from $40M to $80M for McDaniels and Jon Gruden, who resigned in 2021.
