A few days after returning to the NHL, Matt Rempe has now got into his first fight of the 2024-25 season. During the New York Rangers vs. Washington Capitals game on Tuesday night, the 6-foot-9 player got into a scrap with Dylan McIlrath. The fight though did not end in his favor as he was left bleeding.
On Thursday, October 24, the Rangers demoted Rempe to the AHL due to his limited playing time. However, mere days later he was called back from the minor league and found his place among the team again.
As per reports, the two heavyweights seemed to have had a conversation during the warmups. The two would drop their gloves in the early stages of the first period.
The two would throw some punches and grab each other’s sweaters while trying to bring each other down on the ice. As the action unfolded, McIlrath got the better of Rempe as not only did he (Rempe) lose his helmet first, but also got punched hard in the face.
After around 30 seconds of scrapping with one other, the Capitals man dragged down Rempe on the ice and ended the bout. The referees then rushed in to separate the two players. As Rempe skated off the field, he was found bleeding, likely due to a cut below his left eye.

This is not the first altercation between Rempe and McIlrath. The duo fought each other during their time in the AHL in the 2022-23 season when Rempe was part of the Hartford Wolf Pack and McIlrath was with the Hershey Bears. Even on that day, the 22-year-old ended up losing to McIlrath.

I thought Rempe was supposed to be good at fighting. What’s the point of being in the lineup if you get rag dolled every time you fight?

Judging by the reaction of fans, they did not seem too pleased to see Rempe losing. The centre player is now 0-2 against McIlrath in his career. Only time will tell whether Rempe would ask for a Round three against him.
Speaking about the match, the Capitals won the game 5-3 with two goals coming from their captain Alex Ovechkin. He now has 857 goals in his NHL career and needs just 38 more to break the goal-scoring record of Wayne Gretzky.
