Matteo Berrettini the World No. 10 from Italy has been an exciting player to watch ever since he turned Pro. The 25-year old Italian is back on the tour after suffering abdominal issues that led to him withdrawing from the 2021 Australian Open.

The injury kept Matteo out of the tour for nearly 2 months after which he has made a good comeback. He reached the R32 at the Monte Carlo Masters 2021 and then played at the Serbian Open 2021 in Belgrade where he won the title defeating the in-form Russian Aslan Karatsev in a 3-setter.

Berrettini who is seeded 8th at the ATP Madrid Open 2021, had a bye in the first round followed by a routine straight set victory in the second round over fellow countryman Fabio Fognini and has qualified for the Round of 16.

Answering the question about his first thoughts when he thinks of Madrid, Matteo said, “I like the city, I really like Spain in general. Madrid is the capital so it’s nice to be here. I like the vibe in Spain.” Replying to what Spanish culture he would take to Italy, Berrettini replied, “I would bring the Cochinillo to Italy,” “Would bring Pasta to Spain.”

When asked ‘If you could have any one aspect of any Spanish player’, Matteo Berrettini jokingly said, “I would like to have the titles from Rafa.”

Praising the ‘King of Clay’ Rafael Nadal further, Matteo said, “The fact that he is so strong physically and also lefty, I think it is a big weapon.” Matteo praised not only Rafa but in general praised all of the Spanish players and talked about their playing style that attracts him the most.

“Overall, all the Spanish players they are really good fighters. They play hard and fight until the end in every game and every match. I would steal that.” He later gave a special message to the fans in Spanish thanking them for their support.

Matteo Berrettini will next be action in the Round of 16 against Federico Delbonis at the ATP Madrid Open 2021.
