Matthew Stafford added another no-look pass completion to his impressive resume. To make the deal even sweeter, that pass was converted into a touchdown by his Los Angeles Rams teammate and wide receiver Puka Nacua.

On Thursday, Dec. 18, the Rams led the Seattle Seahawks 23-14 at the end of the third quarter. Nacua sliced a 58-yard run through before being taken down by a Seahawks defender.

It gave the Rams a chance to extend their lead on 3rd and goal. Stafford snapped the ball and tossed a no-look pass to Nacua for a one-yard touchdown.

However, the lead was cut short within the next two minutes. Veteran receiver and return specialist Rashid Shaheed scored a 58-yard touchdown on a Rams punt.

Three minutes after Shaheed’s touchdown, Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold found tight end AJ Barner inside the Rams’ endzone to level the score. On the ensuing two-point try, Darnold’s pass ricocheted off a Rams defender’s helmet and landed on the ground before running back Zach Charbonnet recovered it.

Initially, the referee ruled it an incomplete pass, but took a closer look after the Seahawks challenged the decision. After a long pause, the referee reversed his decision and awarded the Seahawks two points, ruling it was a backward pass.

As a result, the game entered overtime. Four minutes in, Nacua scored a 41-yard touchdown to finish off an eighty-yard drive. The Seahawks had six minutes to win the game. They only required three.

On the ninth play of the ensuing drive, Darnold connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a four-yard touchdown. Veteran tight end Eric Saubert converted on the two-point attempt to steal the game away under the Rams’ noses.

The Seahawks won 37-38, improving to 12-3. The Rams let a sixteen-point lead slip through their hands, despite Darnold throwing two interceptions, giving up four sacks, and Cooper Kupp fumbling the ball near the Rams’ goal line.

Matthew Stafford completed 59% of his passes for 457 yards and 3 touchdowns. This was Stafford’s first 400+ yard haul in a Rams shirt and first since throwing 402 yards for the Detroit Lions in a week 13 game against the Chicago Bears.

According to NFL analytics, Stafford is only the fourth player in NFL history to have at least 8 games with 3+ pass TD and zero INT in a season.

This defeat shouldn’t hinder his bid to become the NFL MVP. He leads the league in passing with 4179 yards on 341 completions for 40 passing touchdowns (first) and just 5 interceptions. Of course, he has played one game more than most of the other quarterbacks.

Moreover, Stafford became only the 7th player in NFL history with 4,000+ passing yards in at least 10 career seasons.

Despite the result, ESPN analyst Mina Kimes believes that Stafford is the frontrunner to grab the best player in the league trophy at the end of the season.

The Rams stay at 11-4 and face the 6-9 Atlanta Falcons—already eliminated from playoff contention—in week 16.
