The Los Angeles Rams started the season with a miserable one and four record. At the time, some were skeptical about their chances to be competitive. However, Matthew Stafford and his teammates then put together a nine and three run to reach the playoffs.
They won their Wild Card matchup against the Minnesota Vikings who at one point were looking to set up a trade package for Stafford. Then they lost to eventual Super Bowl entrants, the Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisional Round.
After the game, Stafford suggested that he did not want his final interview of the season to be in their locker room, indicating he wanted to go all the way. Then when a reporter asked him if it was his final interview ever, he mentioned that he was going to weigh all possibilities before taking a decision.
Naturally, the competitor in him would want to continue. But as he is nearing 37 years of age, he had to see if he was willing to put his body on the line for another season or two. Now NFL Insider Ian Rapoport has an update.

Rapoport did acknowledge that the Los Angeles Rams will have to figure out how to remunerate Stafford this season. His contract still has two seasons left, but after last season’s restructure, the team will have to get creative in order to sufficiently compensate him.
Matthew Stafford’s logical option is to continue with Rams
That compensation situation is something that the Rams front office have to figure out. Star QB Matthew Stafford is aging, and his injury history always leaves an asterisk on their chances of continuing to be successful.
They do have Jimmy Garoppolo to help cover if such a situation does arise. But Garoppolo is not the solution if they want to keep competing at a high level. At one point, the Los Angeles Rams has to look towards a younger quarterback who can lead them into the future.
But until then, if their star quarterback wants to continue playing football, the Rams are the only option. He could have his representatives speak with the Vikings or other QB needy teams. But wherever he goes, he will have to learn everything from scratch.
Along with that, his family is rooted into the Los Angeles culture. Moving them again for the sake of another year in football could be too much. The Super Bowl champion might as well play this season. Then he could see how it goes before pondering over his future again next offseason.
