Geno Smith found support from an unexpected source in the fan heckling case that shook the NFL earlier in the campaign. Smith’s great foe, Matthew Stafford‘s wife, Kelly Stafford, supported the Raiders QB by calling out the individual for crossing the invisible line.

Smith followed Pete Carroll and signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, ending his relationship with the Seattle Seahawks. He made a swift return to Seattle with his new team for the first friendly game as a Raider.

Geno may not have been a top 10 quarterback during his time with the Seahawks, but he enjoyed decent success under Carroll’s tutelage. However, nobody expected a hero’s welcome. He did not get one. Instead, a fan chose to heckle the former first-rounder before the game.

A fan held up a poster comparing Smith to former Raiders first-overall pick JaMarcus Russell. In response, Smith pulled a move reminiscent of Lamar Jackson, flashing a middle finger and sparking a nationwide uproar. If it hadn’t been a preseason game, the NFL would have had no choice but to penalize him.

Carroll backed Smith’s actions, with Kelly Stafford chiming in as well. The wife of the Los Angeles Rams quarterback, who has faced her share of public backlash, said that fans often take their criticism too far.

Fans think that they can get away with anything… People are getting braver and braver on the other side of the fences, and it’s gonna come to a head. I don’t understand, it’s just like kindness, like any of those were true with Geno, what a (expletive) thing to do.

The Geno Smith experiment has gone horribly wrong for the Raiders

Smith was signed because of the history he shared with Carroll. Owner Tom Brady‘s role in all of this is unclear, but he must have had a say. However, what matters most are wins, and the Raiders only have 2 from nine games.

To make matters worse, Smith left last week’s loss to the Denver Broncos with a quad injury. There’s doubt about his availability, and Carroll will wait until game day to make the final decision.

Meanwhile, FOX Sports analyst Colin Cowherd called out the Raiders’ leadership for limiting their quarterback search exclusively to Smith.

The Raiders, they overpaid, over-pursued Geno Smith, who once again leads the NFL in picks. I mean, he can’t figure out basic pass protection. It’s bad. Right now, he’s arguably the worst quarterback in the league. In the last two years, Geno Smith has had seven more interceptions than the next highest interception quarterback. So it’s one thing to settle at quarterback. You should never settle at quarterback. It’s another to pursue the wrong one.

Colin Cowherd said in a recent segment of The Herd

Smith leads the league with 12 interceptions and has thrown 1844 yards on 178 completions (66.7% pass completion). Regardless of whether it’s Smith, Kenny Pickett, or Aidan O’Connell under center, the Vegas franchise is not in a position to turn the season around.
