Matthew Stafford almost ended up signing with another franchise or retiring from the sport after the contract tussle he engaged in with the Los Angeles Rams this past offseason. Eventually, he decided to stay put, even though he and his family were rattled by the franchise’s decision to release longtime teammate and close friend Cooper Kupp.

Since then, the quarterback has ended up producing some of his best football this season to the point where he is a regular in MVP discussions. That led former Detroit Lions star Dan Orlovsky to say this on First Take:

There’s no QB who’s made more high leverage throws than Matthew Stafford… If Stafford wins MVP, and he wins the Super Bowl, I think it puts him in the conversation for one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

Dan Orlovsky said

The former quarterback believes that Matthew Stafford has been asked to do a lot of things that would make anyone’s jaw drop. That is unlike Drake Maye, who may have the statistical numbers, but the Patriots’ lack of competition takes the gloss off.

That is why he believes the 37-year-old should be the frontrunner for this year’s MVP trophy. Then, if the Rams end up winning Super Bowl LX, Orlovsky would place their signal caller in the top echelon of some of the best to play the game.

Matthew Stafford and Rams’ stunning comeback falls short against Falcons

Matthew Stafford and his Los Angeles Rams lost their previous game against the Seattle Seahawks in what was an epic overtime thriller. Heading into Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, the hope was that they would revert to their winning ways.

They started off poorly in the first quarter, then saw their quarterback throw two interceptions in the 2nd quarter, the first of which was returned for a touchdown, and the Falcons used the second to engineer another score.

This meant the visitors faced a 0-21 scenario with 30 minutes of football left. Then, the quarterback, who spent two years playing an hour and a half away at Sanford Stadium, started to bring his team back.

After Jared Verse‘s blocked field goal and touchdown, the Rams suddenly were back in position to be within striking distance of winning the game. Then, the Georgia Bulldog threw another interception. Thankfully, the home team did not fully utilize the opportunity, leaving Matthew Stafford to engineer another score, with which they tied the game with nearly three minutes left.

On the next drive, the Falcons scored a field goal, but more importantly, left just 21 seconds for the Rams to make something out of. That clock management worked in their favor, as try as he might, Matthew Stafford could not complete any of the four deep passes to end with another loss.

Matthew Stafford’s 3-interception game could dent MVP hopes

Anyone who was in Matthew Stafford’s corner this season was hoping that the QB would lead his Los Angeles Rams to two more wins before preparing for the postseason.

However, after watching those three interceptions, even his staunchest supporters would question the father of four’s standing in the MVP race, as all three turnovers could have been avoided.

The first throw was high, on the second, he did not count on the safety coming over to help, and on the third, his throw was slightly off target, leaving the Falcons enough space to pounce.

Voters could wait until the final game against the Arizona Cardinals before deciding on their votes, but Matthew Stafford did not do himself a world of good with those three picks.
