In this ugly altercation between the players, Devils’ defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler would immediately come into the defense of Hischier and grabbed the Panthers star.

After landing a few hits on him, Seigenthaler would put the 27-year-old forward into a chokehold. Hischier would also join him and grabbed his opponent as tempers flared between them.

The referees would soon come in and break the tension among the players. For his hit on Hischier, Matthew Tkachuk was handed two minors for interference and roughing. On the other hand, Seigenthaler received a single two-minute roughing penalty.

During the press conference after the game, the 26-year-old admitted that his emotions got the better of him after the hit from the Tkachuk. The reason for this could be due to their previous fight over two years ago, where both of them landed heavy punches on each other.

I think just a little bit too much emotion for me. Obviously, I don’t see him coming. I don’t think I even touched the puck. So that’s part of it. He made the hit, and just I got a little bit emotional there. I want to stick up for myself, too. And like I said, I think I just didn’t like the hit too much. I just got a little bit emotional there. That’s hockey.

Hischier scored his 20th goal of the season in this game to make it 1-1. This marks a fourth successive season where he has scored 20 or more goals in the league. Unfortunately, in the end the Devils ended up losing the game 2-1 through shootout.

The New Jersey Devils have now lost two of their last three games and are 26-15-5 for the season. The Florida Panthers on the other hand snapped a two-game losing run and are now 26-16-3. Both teams are currently second in their respective divisions after this match.
