On Sunday, Matthew Tkachuk once again generated a massive buzz while representing his country. During the clash between the United States of America and Germany, the American forward threw a brutal “bridesmaid” shade at German star Leon Draisaitl.

In the Group C matchup, the Americans were hoping to continue their perfect run, having beaten Latvia 5-1 and Denmark with a 6-3 scoreline. The Germans, on the other hand, were looking to cause an upset after losing 4-3 to Latvia in their previous game.

As many predicted, Team USA came out as the winners. Two goals from captain Auston Matthews set them up for a 5-1 victory. This result saw them finish top of their group and automatically qualify for the quarter-finals.

The highlight moment of the game, however, turned out to be Tkachuk’s chirp at Draisaitl. As the two players headed to the bench in the middle of the game, Tkachuk was caught on the hot mic chirping at his opponent and calling him a “bridesmaid.

Always the bridesmaid eh Leon? Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

Matthew Tkachuk told Leon Draisaitl

Tkachuk’s comments were referring to his team, the Florida Panthers beating Draisaitl and the Edmonton Oilers twice in the Stanley Cup final. In 2024, the Panthers went 3-0 up and were looking to complete a sweep of the Oilers in the finals.

While the Oilers found a way back and won 3 straight to tie the series at 3-3 and force Game 7, they lost the final game and suffered the loss.

A year later, the two teams meet each other again in the Final. In Game 1, Draisaitl scored an overtime winner to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead. After losing Games 2 and 3, the German international stepped up again and scored another overtime winner in Game 4 to tie the series.

Unfortunately for Draisaitl, the Panthers ran away with the title after that. A 5-2 win in Game 5 was followed by a 5-1 win in Game 6 for the Florida-based side. This saw them repeat as champions and break the hearts of the Oilers for a 2nd year running.

This is also not the first time Tkachuk has found himself in the spotlight during an international event. Last year at the 4 Nations Face-Off, he stole several headlines following his fight with Brandon Hagel of Canada within 2 seconds in the game. It was one of the three fights that took place inside 9 seconds of an intense USA-Canada match.

In the post-game conference, the 28-year-old expressed that sometimes the team needs to play that part (trash-talking) and credited Jack Eichel and the others for not giving the Germans much chance in the game.

Some guys you got to play, you know, harder than most, physically and maybe after the whistle sometimes, too. But I thought our line, I thought [Eichel] especially, did an unbelievable job of giving him and their line nothing tonight. So sometimes you gotta play both parts of the game.

Matthew Tkachuk told the reporters regarding his chirp on Leon Draisaitl

In 3 games, Draisaitl has scored 1 goal and has 2 assists. Meanwhile, Tkachuk has 5 points in 3 games. All of his points have been assists so far.

He and his team will now wait to see who they face in the quarter finals. The winner of the Sweden-Latvia play-off game will face Team USA. As for Draisaitl and his team, they will face Slovakia on February 18 if they beat France in the play-off round.
