In a fierce battle between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday, things got heated between Max Domi and Zemgus Girgensons. This led to a wild brawl between the two players.

The incident took place during the third period of the game when the Lightning were 5-1 down. With less than six minutes remaining on the clock, Girgensons delivered a huge hit on Domi’s teammate, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, behind the net.

The 29-year-old forward did not take this action of Girgensons kindly. Following the Lightning man’s hit on Ekman-Larsson, Domi lashed out at him.

Domi would land several shots on his opponent before falling down on the ice with him. Despite this, the Maple Leafs star continued to punch Girgensons before the referees finally skated over to stop the fight. Check out a video from X regarding this below:

While both players received a five-minute major penalty for hitting each other, Domi was handed another two-minute minor penalty for roughing up Girgensons. In the end, the Maple Leafs ended up as comfortable 5-2 winners with Domi registering his sixth assist of the season to set up William Nylander for the opener in the first period.

Fans react to Max Domi’s fight with Zemgus Girgensons

Following the altercation between Max Domi and Zemgus Girgensons, fans on social media were quick to react to it. While some supported the decision of Domi to stand up for his teammate, some bashed him for punching Girgensons while he was down on the ice.

A fan on X called him a “tool“, whereas another fan wrote, “Punching while down is such a b**** move” while being unimpressed by him. Several others drew comparisons to his father, Tie Domi, who had 333 fighting majors in his NHL career.

With that huge victory in the Atlantic Division matchup, the Maple Leafs improved their record to 4-2-0. They will now face the Colombus Blue Jackets in their next encounter and hope to build on this win. The Lightning on the other hand will have to pick themselves up from this defeat as they face Metropolitan Division leaders, the New Jersey Devils, on Tuesday night.
