The New York Yankees did not waste time after losing ex-outfielder Juan Soto to the rival time the New York Mets. They penned a massive 8-year $218 million deal with ace pitcher Max Fried on Tuesday.
It is the largest deal for a left-handed pitcher in MLB history. The contract is pending a physical, but the news is confirmed via several industry sources. Fried’s contract also stands as the 4th largest deal for a pitcher after Shohei Ohtani ($700 million), Yoshinobu Yamamoto ($325 million), and Gerrit Cole ($324 million).
Max Fried is expected to play as No.2 in the Bronx behind Gerrit Cole in rotation. The team is also expecting a comeback from Carlos Rodon after signing a 6-year $162 million deal. Rodon’s performance year was marred with injuries, however, he showed better results in 2024.
The Yankees pitchers currently involve – Cole, Rodon, Luis Gil, Marcus Stroman, Nestor Cortes, Clarke Schmidt, and the newly joined Max Fried. Although the Yankees may look into trading options for Stroman and Cortes in free agency.

MLB insider Andy Martino in an interview discussed the NY Yankees move for Fried and why they didn’t go for offensive players to strengthen the lineup. Martino believes the Yankees are yet done in free agency and having an elite rotation with Fried in the mix is a good move.

The NY Yankees were holding back from investments in free agency so far due to Juan Soto‘s bidding. They offered the superstar outfielder a 16-year $760 million deal, but he chose the Mets for 15-year $765 million deal instead.

With Soto’s deal done, the team is finally moving forward to add potential players from the free agency for their 2025 run. The Yankees fans are celebrating the team’s sign-up for Fried on social media platforms.
