On Monday, the Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a 7-4 loss against their city rivals, the Los Angeles Angels. This loss meant that the Angels won the 2025 Freeway Season series as they won their 4th game against the Dodgers. Following the game, Max Muncy opened up about this and expressed that it was a “bad loss” for them.

The Dodgers have suffered a major skid in their form in recent weeks. The 2024 World Series champions have had mixed results in the past few games, leaving them with a 68-50 record before they headed into the game on Monday.

In the previous 3-game series between them earlier this year, the Angels did something that they had not done since 2010. The American League side completed a 3-game series sweep of the Dodgers, winning 6-2, 11-9, and 6-4.

On Monday, the Angels took an early lead as Zach Neto homered off Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the bottom of the first inning. They would score 4 runs in the 5th and added another run in the 6th inning to take a 7-0 lead.

In the top of the 8th inning, their former star Shohei Ohtani smashed his 42nd home run of the season and his 100th at Angel Stadium, to open the account of his team. Muncy would then crush a 3-run home run to reduce the deficit to 7-4.

However, the Angels were able to hold on to the lead as Kenley Jansen recorded the save. This saw the Angels claim their 4th win of the season against the Dodgers and earned them their first season series win against their city rivals since 2019.

After the game, Muncy would address the team’s loss and expressed that the team needs to find a way to snap out of the slump.

This was a bad loss for us. There’s not really a way of getting around that… Just not going well for us right now. We’ve got to find a way to snap out of it. No one’s going to feel sorry for us, so it’s on us to find our way out of it and we need to do it.

Max Muncy told the reporters

Before this season, the Dodgers had been the dominant side in the Freeway Series. The Angels had a 5-23 record against the Dodgers in the last five seasons.

Dodgers’ season opener loss against Angels narrows down division lead

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost again on Monday night as the Los Angeles Angels took the series opener with a 7-4 win. Following this loss, the division lead of the Dodgers has narrowed down to 1 game in the National League West standings.

At one stage, they were leading the division comfortably. However, series sweeps against the Houston Astros and the Milwaukee Brewers since July have seen them tumbling down the hill.

As they ended up on the losing side on Monday, their rivals, the San Diego Padres, picked up their 3rd successive win and extended their record to 67-52. They are now just 1 game behind the Dodgers in the NL West divisional standings. To make matters more interesting, the two of them will lock horns against each other after their current respective series.

There is a chance that the Padres could enter this weekend’s series against the Dodgers while being ahead of them in the standings. The two of them will also face each other next weekend in a 3-game series at Petco Park.

Speaking on this matter, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed that they need to play “good” baseball against the Padres as things have gotten interesting.

I don’t think anyone is blind to the fact that the standings are the standings. It’s gotten a lot more interesting. So we’ve got to go out there and play good baseball.

Dave Roberts said as per MLB.com

The Padres last won the division title in 2006. Since then, the Dodgers have been champions of the NL West on 13 occasions, including 11 out of the last 12 seasons.
