Buffalo Bills rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston is facing a civil lawsuit just weeks after being selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The 21-year-old, drafted No. 30 overall in April, has been accused of s**ually assaulting a woman in 2021 during his early days as a student-athlete at the University of Kentucky.

Tthe lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky. It was later obtained by USA Today. According to the complaint, the woman alleged that Hairston arrived at her dorm room unexpectedly, expressing interest in spending time together.

She declined, stating she was tired and heading to bed. However, the filing claimed that Hairston followed her into her bedroom and s**ually assaulted her after she rejected his repeated advances.

Alongside the assault accusation, the woman is also pursuing charges of intentional infliction of emotional distress. Furthermore, the defendant has also sought a jury trial with compensatory damages.

Peter Flowers, one of the attorneys representing the woman, emphasized the courage it took for his client to come forward. Flowers stated the following in a statement to USA Today:

Our client showed remarkable strength in coming forward, and we are proud to stand with her in pursuit of accountability and justice. No one — regardless of their status or athletic success — is above the law,”

The legal action comes at a delicate time for Hairston, who entered the NFL with high expectations. Known for his on-field agility and defensive reads, Hairston was part of a highly touted draft class. He was projected to make an immediate impact for the Bills’ defense this season.

However, this off-field development has cast him among the growing list of NFL players with s****l allegations. Nevertheless, the Buffalo Bills were previously made aware of the initial allegation prior to the draft process.

During the same, the incident was reportedly investigated under Title IX guidelines at the University of Kentucky after the woman filed a report with the school. Despite the report, no criminal charges were filed at the time. It is no longer the case.

Bills GM Brandon Beane comfortable with draft decision despite allegation

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane had addressed the matter directly a day after the draft. He said the team had done “a lot of research” into Hairston’s background and felt comfortable with their decision to select him.

Brandon Beane noted a few great attributes of Maxwell Hairston:

He’s an impeccable kid. I think all teams were aware of the Title IX thing. That was fully investigated by the school. He even volunteered to do a polygraph and had notes. It was one of those where there was zero information saying that this actually happened, to what the accusation was

Beane further stated that Hairston’s invitation to the NFL Scouting Combine would not have been extended had the league found any credibility to the accusation.

The lawsuit marks the second wave of scrutiny for Hairston in relation to this 2021 incident. Though the university’s investigation did not result in a public finding or disciplinary action, the new civil case brings renewed attention and pressure on both the athlete and the team.

At present, Hairston has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. Similarly, the Buffalo Bills have also not issued an updated statement since the draft remarks made by Beane. The NFL has yet to indicate whether it will initiate a separate investigation under the league’s personal conduct policy.
