Azerbaijan GP was another race where McLaren’s Oscar Piastri demonstrated how good his skills and the car are. Starting from second place behind Charles Leclerc, the Australian seized a great opportunity to overtake him on lap 20 and then maintained his lead to secure the win.
However, team principal Andrea Stella revealed that the team plans to make the car even faster. He said that he was very pleased with Oscar Piastri‘s second win, which gave them crucial points in securing a lead in the Constructors’ Championship. Stella stated that the team is working on upgrades for the current season and is in the final stages of preparing them.
Stella preferred not to reveal specific details about the upgrades or when they would come into action. However, he assured that they have a clear plan to improve the car’s speed in the upcoming races.
We are definitely working on upgrades for this season. We are now finalising this. I don't want to disclose too much in terms of what and when, but we do have a plan to make the car faster.Andrea Stella said (via Pitdebrief.com)
The 53-year-old further mentioned that it’s uncertain if the upgrades will be successful. Stella explained that at this advanced stage of car development, making changes to the car’s design is challenging. He also said that ensuring that the car performs as expected is difficult.
Whether we will be able to do it or not, we will see, because I think we have seen that at this level of development, it's not an easy task to actually change the specification of the car and get it to work as you expect in your development tools.Andrea Stella added
Andrea Stella wants FIA’s document to reveal McLaren specifics when they’re published
Andrea Stella confirmed that McLaren has new upgrades planned for the upcoming races. He preferred not to give away too many details right now. Instead, Stella will let the official FIA documents reveal these details when they are published, meaning teams might learn about the upgrades before Friday’s (September 20) practice session at the Singapore GP.
I can confirm that we have some stuff coming for the next races, and I will let the [FIA] document surprise when they are published.Andrea Stella said (via Pitdebrief.com)
McLaren’s midseason increase in pace has already surprised its rivals, making it realize that it is now the team to beat. If it introduces more upgrades and they prove effective, nothing will stop it from winning the championship. This would also influence other teams to bring their own upgrades to stay competitive.
