Meg Lanning retired from international cricket on 23rd November, 2023. She claimed medical issues was the reason she took the step, but continues to play domestic and franchise cricket.
Months after her retirement, Meg Lanning has finally opened up on why she retired from international cricket. She said on Howie Games podcast that she was obsessed with exercise, but kept a diet that didn’t suit her, causing her health issues.

I was over-exercising and under-fuelling, I got to the point where I was doing about 85-90 km (running) a week. I was in denial.Meg Lanning said
She said her over-exercising obsession caused a drop in her weight, which led to a drop in her concentration levels. She also became a “new person,” stating that she didn’t enjoy spending time with people, preferring to be alone. Lanning said she could only tolerate some people and became moody as well. This led to her pulling out of the 2023 Women’s Ashes.
Meg Lanning’s road to recovery
After pulling out from the Ashes, Lanning started on the road to recovery. She admitted that what she had wasn’t an eating disorder, but rather her spiraling out of control. She approached doctors and began working on her comeback to domestic cricket.

The former-Australian captain said she struggled with sleep, which made her dread nights. Lanning started getting healthy again and worked her way back to full fitness.
After taking an indefinite break in August 2022, she returned to international cricket in January 2023. During her time off, she worked as a barista in a cafe in Melbourne. And later, she led the Australians to their 6th ICC Women’s T20 WC title. Lanning was then purchased and appointed as Delhi Capital’s captain at the WPL, leading them to two finals.
