Hollywood star and now entrepreneur Meghan Markle recently made an appearance as a guest on the ‘Aspire With Emma Grede’ podcast, where she shared some advice given to her by Serena Williams. Grede, the host of the podcast, is a serial entrepreneur and investor and the founding partner of Skims.

Markle and Williams have been friends for over a decade. They both met for the first time at Super Bowl XLIV when the Indianapolis Colts faced off against the New Orleans Saints in 2010. Since then they’ve attended several other Super Bowls, Markle has attended Williams’ matches at the US Open and Wimbledon.

Williams and her husband Alexis Ohanian were also invited to the royal wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in 2018. Williams was also the first guest on Markle’s podcast, ‘Archetypes’ which came out in 2020.

On Grede’s podcast, Markle opened up about the intense public interest and scrutiny that has followed her for nearly a decade now. Williams has also battled immense scrutiny throughout her career. Markle praised Williams’ business endeavors before going on to share the advice the American tennis legend gave her.

My dear friend, Serena… she’s doing so well… translating knowledge from the court and being dedicated to another avenue. It doesn’t mean you have to stay in one lane for your whole life, it means you can translate those skills somewhere else, that’s probably part of the magic, but she said to me, ‘A lie can’t live forever.’ Eight years is a long time, but it’s not forever.

Serena Williams’ business ventures

Beyond excelling as a tennis player, Serena Williams is also a highly successful businesswoman with multiple ventures and investments. In August 2009, Serena and Venus Williams became minority owners of the Miami Dolphins after purchasing a small stake in the team. According to the Dolphins, the Williams sisters are the first African-American women to hold any amount of ownership in an NFL franchise.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, often referred to as the GOAT in tennis, has invested in several companies, including Impossible Foods, Noom, and Esusu. She has founded several brands like Will Perform, Wyn Beauty, and 926 Productions.

She purchased the Los Angeles Golf Club in 2023 alongside her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and her sister, Venus. She is the owner of the NWSL team Angel City FC, and in 2025 she also announced ownership of the Canadian WNBA team Toronto Tempo.
