DONE DEAL: Memphis Depay joins FC Barcelona

Memphis Depay has been linked with the FC Barcelona for quite some time, and the transfer has now been officially announced by the club. Depay joins the Catalan club as a free agent on a deal that ends after the 2022/23 season. He is Barcelona’s fourth transfer of a busy transfer window so far, after signing Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia from Manchester City (also free transfers), and Emerson Royal from Real Betis.

Career so far:

Memphis Depay has played for PSV, Manchester United and Lyon so far. Depay joined PSV in 2006, at just twelve years old. He made his way through the PSV youth squads and finally got his senior team debut at the age of seventeen. He continued to make a splash in the football world and soon clubs began to notice his talent. In his final season with the Dutch club, Depay finished the league as top scorer as PSV won the league with an 18 point advantage over nearest challengers Ajax.

FC Barcelona is Memphis Depay’s fourth career club, after PSV, Lyon and United.

This was enough proof of his quality as Manchester United came knocking not long after. In the summer window of 2015, it was announced that the Red Devils bought him for a reported £25 million. Unfortunately, this move did not work out as well as United would have hoped, as Memphis struggled to adapt to the Premier League. Ultimately, he was sold to French club Lyon in the January of 2017.

At Lyon, Depay enjoyed the most proficient form of his career, as he has scored 76 goals and made 55 assists in 178 appearances for the club.

After publicly stating his desire to play under Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman, a transfer to Barcelona has been in the works for quite some time now. Depay previously played under Koeman for the Dutch national side before the Barcelona legend returned to manage his club in the August of 2020.

The versatile Memphis Depay can play across the frontline and behind a striker as well. Barcelona would be hoping that Depay has the same impact in Spain as he did in France, after finishing their last league season in third place and getting knocked out of the Champions League by PSG. Even though they were victorious in the domestic cup competition, Copa del Rey, the fans of the club would be expecting to have a more successful season in 2021/22.

Memphis will be playing alongside other world-class attacking talents in Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmanne Dembele and Ansu Fati. His present Euro campaign has been successful so far as Netherlands have comfortably qualified for the next round with a match remaining.
