Merab Dvalishvili has steadily built a reputation as one of the UFC’s most relentless competitors, and now his rise is drawing lofty comparisons from his own team. In a sport where new stars constantly emerge, it isn’t often that coaches mention their fighters alongside legends of the past. Yet, for Dvalishvili, the belief is that his potential could one day mirror that of Georges St-Pierre, a name synonymous with greatness in MMA.

Dvalishvili splits his time between Serra-Longo Fight Team in New York and Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas, two gyms known for producing top-tier fighters. Under the guidance of Matt Serra and Ray Longo, he developed his relentless grappling style and fight IQ. At the same time, his work at both gyms has exposed him to a wide variety of elite training partners such as Khalil Rountree Jr and Aljamain Sterling.

Known as ‘The Machine’ for his unmatched pace and cardio, Dvalishvili has proven to be a nightmare matchup for opponents who struggle to keep up with his relentless pressure. His coach at Syndicate MMA, John Wood, recently drew comparisons to a similar career path as St-Pierre’s in an interview with Inside Fighting and revealed changes in the Georgian’s game plan.

He’s got so much room to grow, and he’s getting so much better every week, every camp. It blows me away to where I’m like, I don’t know what the limit is. I think he can go on a run that breaks all the records. I think he can be this generation’s GSP.

These comments come after Wood promised a new version of Dvalishvili in future matches. The Georgian champion pressures opponents by draining their gas tank with superior wrestling. This has led to the majority of his fights being slow-paced and ending in decisions. However, Wood promised a version of the 135lbs champ that will fight and entertain in the Octagon while showing dangerous skill levels.

While he faced initial setbacks in his early UFC career, ‘The Machine’ has been on a dominating 13-fight win streak since 2018. He remains one of the most active fighters and a fan favorite due to his active social media presence. He has defeated the likes of Jose Aldo, Petr Yan, and Henry Cejudo, and is set to fight #4-ranked bantamweight Cory Sandhagen at UFC 320 for his third title defense.

Drawing parallels to Georges St-Pierre is no small statement. GSP wasn’t just a dominant welterweight champion; he set standards for preparation, adaptability, and longevity that few have matched. For Merab Dvalishvili’s team to suggest he could embark on a similar kind of run underscores the confidence they have in his mindset and durability.

In mixed martial arts, few opportunities can shape a fighter’s growth more than learning alongside the sport’s icons. Moments like these not only bring valuable experience but also highlight the respect between generations of athletes who have left their mark on the game. For Merab Dvalishvili, such a moment recently became reality.

The bantamweight champion expressed his honor in training with Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson, who is widely considered the greatest flyweight of all time. Johnson’s technical mastery, fight IQ, and adaptability have made him a living blueprint for success inside the cage. For Merab, sharing the mats with a fighter of that caliber represents a chance to absorb wisdom that few ever get firsthand.

Beyond sharpening skills, training with Mighty Mouse also underscores Merab’s hunger to learn from the very best. Sandhagen’s movement and footwork remain a concern for the bantamweight champion. As such, DJ has shown his ability to mimic other fighters. It’s the kind of training experience that could further elevate Dvalishvili’s game as he continues his pursuit of greatness at UFC 320.
