Lionel Messi equalled Xavi Hernandez’s record of Barcelona’s highest all time appearances when he went out to play against Huesca. Messi celebrated the achievement with 2 long range goals as Barcelona thumped Huesca 4-1 in La Liga.

Lionel Messi made his 767th appearance for Barcelona in all competitions and scored his 20th La Liga goal of the season. Barcelona moved up to 2nd in the La Liga table with the victory and are now just 4 points of Atletico Madrid.

Messi started the scoring for Barcelona in the 13th minute when he cut onto his left foot and curled a stellar shot into the upper left corner. Griezmann emulated Messi’s strike 10 minutes from half-time to double Barcelona’s advantage once again striking from a long range.

Rafa Mir cut Barca’s advantage in half just before the break with an unstoppable strike from the penalty spot after Marc-Andre ter Stegen was whistled for a harsh foul in the area. However, Messi’s pinpoint cross for Mingueza restored Barcelona’s 2 goal advantage early in the 2nd half. Messi then completed his record equalling night for Barcelona with his 20th La Liga goal of the season.

Ronald Koeman was full of praises for his Argentine talisman after the match and labelled him the best player to have ever played for Barcelona.

“I think Messi has shown that he is the best. You can’t say anything else about him,” Koeman said. “The level that he has been at for so many years during so many games.

“He’s the most important person in Barca’s history — thank goodness he’s with us! I think he’s shown once again today that he’s the best. The first goal was fantastic. He deserved to be important for this team.”
