Mesut Ozil and Arsenal have reached an agreement to terminate the player’s contract. Ozil is expected to leave for Fenerbahce in the winter transfer window.

Ozil had earlier indicated his intention of seeing out his contract at Arsenal. However, his prospects of playing again for Arsenal are very slim and Fenerbahce are pushing for a move.

Since then, and especially following the end of Arsene Wenger’s reign as manager. His involvement has become increasingly limited, initially under Unai Emery and then Mikel Arteta.

He has decided to forego his huge salary at Arsenal in order to play football again this season. He was left out of Arsenal’s Premier League and Europa League squads this season. Arteta made it clear that he wasn’t in his plans and Ozil took the decision in his stride.

Mesut Ozil last played for arsenal on March 7th 2020 .Arsenal wanted to reduce the burden on their wage bill as he was deemed surplus to their requirements.

He said in a Twitter question and answer session on Monday that Turkey and the US were the “two countries I want to play football in before I retire”. He also explained that he grew up as a Fenerbahçe fan, describing them as a Turkish version of Real Madrid.

A move to Fenerbahce looks imminent and it will benefit both parties. The move will end Ozil’s 7 and a half year spell at Arsenal after he joined from Real Madrid. Ozil, one of the great midfielders in his prime, is too big a player to warm the bench.  Ozil will want to get out on the pitch and play after his career tapered out in Arsenal.
