New York Mets and second baseman Nick Madrigal agree to a 1-year contract, pending physical. The team has yet to confirm it on his official accounts but several sources have already verified the signing.
The Madrigal and Mets deal came as a surprise to many as fans were expecting a final Pete Alonso call or a reunion of Jose Iglesias and NY. As per MLB sources, it’s a split contract with different values in the major and minor leagues.
The Mets have yet to pursue Iglesias who reached free agency following the end of his contract. On paper, Madrigal seems to be an option for Iglesias with the latter having more flexibility.

Unlike Iglesias, the NY Mets can send Madrigal to the minor league for better grooming if required and start him out with the Triple-A Syracuse. His batting average is .317, an okay result for the Mets.

Several fans thought it would be news of the New York Mets and Pete Alonso finally agreeing to a deal or the team penning Jose Iglesias. While they’ve not pursued Iglesias heavily in free agency, the focus remains on re-signing Alonso.
Insider Boomer Esiason commented on how the Mets may just confirm a deal with Alonso by today or tomorrow. He was confident in his claim saying, “if it doesn’t happen, you can call me a jackass, whatever you want.”
MLB insider Jon Heyman also noted that Pete Alonso is “desperate” to be back in Queens after rejecting their initial offer. Apart from the Mets, the 1B is also hearing from the Toronto Blue Jays but a signing with them seems impossible at the moment.
However, seems like the fans will have to wait to hear the confirmation of the Alonso-Mets deal for now. Following Nick Madrigal’s signing, one X user questioned, “Ok but can he sing?”. Another noted, “Over Iglesias? Really?” Check more reactions below:
