The 2025 season turned out to be one to forget for the New York Mets. The National League side suffered a dramatic collapse which saw them miss the playoffs. Team owner Steve Cohen would later issue an apology to the fans for this.
The Mets had one of the best starts in the league this year and were comfortably leading their NL East division at one stage. On June 12th, they had a 45-24 record, which was the best record for any team in the league.
At that point, qualification for the playoffs seemed like a mere formality for the Mets. However, the season would soon take a massive turn.
They would lose 9 of their next 10 games, which saw them getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays and the Atlanta Braves. They did fall and recover a bit and entered the All-Star Break with a 55-42 record.
Following a 7-game winning run, which took their record to 62-44, things went downhill for them. They would go 2-14 in their next 16 games. Their inconsistent run continued from there on as they did manage to sweep the Philadelphia Phillies in a 3-game set in August.
In September, the Phillies got their revenge. Their 4-game series sweep of the Mets put the Queens-based side in trouble. Heading into the final week, the Mets did not have the destiny of the playoffs in their hand as they were out of the wild card spots.
On the final day, they needed to win against the Miami Marlins and hope for a favor from the Milwaukee Brewers. While the Brewers did beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-2, the Mets ended up losing 4-0 against the Marlins. This loss saw the Reds take the final wild card spot in the NL despite both teams finishing with an 83-79 record, as they owned the tiebreaker over the Mets.

Following the team’s failure to qualify for the playoffs, owner Steve Cohen broke his silence. The 69-year-old thanked the fans for their support and admitted that the team did not do their part.
Mets fans everywhere. I owe you an apology. You did your part by showing up and supporting the team. We didn’t do our part. We will do a post-mortem and figure out the obvious and less obvious reasons why the team didn’t perform up to your and my expectations. We are all feeling raw emotions today. I know how much time and effort you have put into this team. The result was unacceptable.

The Mets had one of the biggest payrolls in MLB this season at $340 million. Following the record-breaking signing of Juan Soto from free agency last season, the team was expected to go further than their National League Championship Series (NLCS) run last season.
Unfortunately for them, Soto’s first season as a Met will not bring any silverware. Had they qualified for the playoffs, they would have faced off against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team that eliminated them from the NLCS last year, in the first round wild card series. Instead, the Reds will now lock horns with the reigning champions on Tuesday.
Worrying stat sums up Mets’ epic collapse in 2025
The topsy-turvy 2025 season for the New York Mets came to an end on Sunday after they lost 4-0 against the Miami Marlins. The defeat in the final game of the season saw them miss out on the playoffs. A worrying stat would later sum up their epic collapse this year.

While the trio of Juan Soto, Francisco Lindor, and Pete Alonso combined to hit 112 home runs and drive in 317 RBIs, the offense of the team would go quiet in several games. One big worrying thing for the Mets was their inability to make late comebacks.
The team had a 0-67 record in the MLB when trailing after 8 innings. Every other team had at least one win from this situation. They are the only ones who failed to win any of the games in which they trailed late on.

In the final game of the season, the Mets once again left the runners stranded. In the fifth inning, Alonso came out to bat with the bases loaded and two outs. The 5-time MLB All-Star ended up hitting a 116 mph line drive straight to Javier Sanoja, which ended the inning.
The upcoming offseason will be a huge one for them. With Alonso announcing his decision to opt out of his deal following their bitter end to the season, the team will have to worry about him again. Will they re-sign him or let him finally go? Will they go strong again and bring in some top talents? All these big questions will be answered in due time.
