Floyd Mayweather was set to rematch Victor Ortiz in an exhibition match on August 24th in Mexico. Previously, the CDMX government had publicly announced that the 50-0 legend would appear. Floyd Mayweather was set to conduct a massive free boxing class and open workout this Thursday, May 16, at the Zocalo in Mexico City. However, the boxer’s no-show has ruined all the plans.

According to ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez (@ChavaESPN), the Mexican capital’s government has canceled the massive class. They also intended for Mayweather to announce running things back with Victor Ortiz after the session. He also received a bountiful sum of $1 million to appear, along with several boxing personalities. Boxing promoter Fernando Beltran and the likes of Daniel Zaragoza, Juan Paredes, and even Jaime Munguia were scheduled to appear.

Munguia last lost his bid to snag Canelo Alvarez’s IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO 168-pound straps. The boxing world awaits the next billing of both. Meanwhile, ‘Money’ had an agreement to compete at the Plaza De Toros in an exhibition match. For the time being, organizers do not have a concrete reason for the cancellation of Mayweather’s massive class.

Recently, Mayweather posted on social media that his next fight would happen in Mexico. However, without an appearance, even if via video link, World Boxing News reports that his original opponent, Victor Ortiz – was dropped from the main event slot. This was due to Ortiz & John Gotti III having the same rep and prioritizing this rematch over a second coming of the 2011 pro fight, as per Fighthype’s Ben Thompson.

Gervonta Davis and Floyd Mayweather’s relation spirals into abyss

Gervonta Davis was once a stalwart of Mayweather Promotions and a prime protege of ‘Money.’ He parted ways in 2023 to join up with Al Haymon’s PBC. While parting on amiable terms, recent times have seen their friendship sour beyond measure. It’s rumored their recent split is over Davis’ intimate relations with his daughter, Yaya Mayweather.

‘Tank’ took to social media to retort to Mayweather’s claim that his fight with Frank Martin on June 15th would not take place. In a since-deleted post, Floyd Mayweather said he felt sorry for the matter. Davis shot back, citing World Boxing News’ coverage of Mayweather’s absence from Wednesday’s press conference in Mexico. Mayweather agreed to a $1 million fee to promote a rematch in the region but did not attend. He later had a retraction of the original bulletin about it all.

ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez confirmed Victor Ortiz attended. But his presence was not made public onstage. Gotti III was also in Mexico, according to media reports. Mayweather had also sought a rematch with Gotti during Super Bowl week in February.

The WBA lightweight champion mocked Mayweather was out “scamming” fans and disrupting his matches. Davis had also recently made viral claims about the boxing veteran being a hostage in Dubai. All in all, there’s no end in sight to their dispute.
