Jimmy Butler reflects on loss and resilience in Netflix’s Starting 5.

The most anticipated series on Netflix is finally here and it sheds light on a personal tragedy for Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler during the 2023-24 season. The series, which followed Butler along with Anthony Edwards, LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis, and Jayson Tatum, revealed that Butler’s father sadly passed away before the All-Star break.

In a sad turn of events, Jimmy Butler shared that his father, Jimmy Butler Jr., died of a terminal illness on February 8, 2024. Fans would remember that Butler took a brief leave of absence at that time, where he missed the Heat’s final three games before the All-Star break.

Right after All-Star break, [my teammates] really need me to be a lot better. I wanna always answer to that call. But I couldn’t care less about basketball right now. I don’t care. It sucks to hurt. It sucks to lose people. I didn’t know what to do. No amount of money in the world could bring him back. Basketball, no matter how much I played it, it couldn’t fix that.

Furthermore, by the end of the season, Butler averaged 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and five assists, which helped the Heat make a playoff push. However, an injury hampered his efforts, and Miami fell to the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs.
