Jakub Mensik earned his place in the biggest final of his career after defeating Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals of the Miami Open. The victory was the 19-year-old’s second Top 10 win in Florida. He now has a very difficult task in securing the title as he will face a rejuvenated and in-form Novak Djokovic in the final.

Djokovic is all out to secure his 100th career title in Miami. The former World No.1 was not among the favorites to win the title when he arrived for the competition due to his shocking first round exit in Indian Wells. But he looks to have put his failures behind him and is yet to drop a set in the ATP Masters tournament.

Jakub Mensik vs. Novak Djokovic: Match Preview

Jakub Mensik has been one of the coming-up youngsters in the ATP but has been largely unpopular unlike Joao Fonseca and Learner Tien. That is largely because of the fact that he hasn’t been outstanding since the start of the season. In fact, his best run this season was reaching the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International and Auckland Classics.

But since arriving in Miami, he has been an absolute joy to watch. He earned his first Top 10 win when he stunned Jack Draper in the second round 7-6(2), 7-6(3). After that, he defeated Roman Safiullin in straight set before taking out Arthur Fils 7-6(5), 6-1 in the quarter-finals. On Friday (Match 28), he executed one of the masterclass performances of his career to beat Taylor Fritz 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (4) in the semi-finals.

On the other hand, Novak Djokovic began the season by reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open, which was quite great considering he suffered an injury. But after his return to the court, he lost two consecutive opening round matches in two different tournaments. The 37-year-old was believed to be completely out of form, but he has made a big statement in Miami.

He stunned his doubters after overcoming Camilo Ugo Carabelli and then Lorenzo Musetti 6-2, 6-2 in the fourth round of the Miami Open. The World No.5 gave an emphatic performance in the quarter-finals to oust Sebastian Korda in straight sets. In the semi-finals, he wasted no time to beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-3 to extend his head-to-head record over the Bulgarian to 13-1.

Jakub Mensik vs. Novak Djokovic: Match Prediction

Novak Djokovic is seeking to make history in Miami. He is currently tied with Andre Agassi for the most titles won in the ATP Masters tournament with six. Furthermore, it would also be his 41st career Masters 1000 title, a victory that will cement his name as the greatest player that has graced the court.

However, it is going to be a difficult task for Djokovic. Jakub Mensik has played his best tennis and has, in fact, won two Top 10 players in Miami. The duo have only crossed paths once in their career and that came at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, which Djokovic won 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-4. It’s almost six months since the match was played, and that may be overlooked now that both players are in different phases of their careers.

Nonetheless, Djokovic is desperate to end his title drought. The last time he won a trophy was at the Paris Olympics, but his last tour-level title was at the 2023 ATP Finals in Turin. It’s over a year since he last won an ATP title and he needs it now more than ever to make a big statement to his critics.

Match prediction: Novak Djokovic to win in three sets.
