Aryna Sabalenka is one win away from claiming the Sunshine Double, an achievement no female player has managed to do since Ashleigh Barty in 2021. Aryna Sabalenka began the year strongly, winning the Brisbane International and reaching the final of the Australian Open. The 27-year-old then suffered an injury that forced her to miss the Middle East swing, but she returned at the Indian Wells Open, where she dropped just one set en route to the title.

At the Miami Open, the World No.1 continued with her form, beating Ann Li and Caty McNally in straight sets. She defeated former top 10 star Qinwen Zheng in the round of 16, 6-3, 6-4 before breezing past big-hitting American Hailey Baptiste 6-4, 6-4. On Thursday (March 26), she gave an excellent performance against World No.2 Elena Rybakina, winning 6-4, 6-3.

On the other hand, Coco Gauff failed to defend the United Cup with America and suffered a disappointing quarter-final loss at the Australian Open against Elina Svitolina. She tried to rebound during the Middle East swing, but managed to reach the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships before losing to Svitolina for the second time this season.

However, things began to take shape for Gauff in Miami as she took down Elisabetta Cocciaretto 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. She completed a comeback against Alycia Parks 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 before overcoming Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. In the quarter-finals, she picked up a fine win over dangerous Belinda Bencic, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, before thrashing Qatar Open champion Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-1 in the last four.

Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff have a long history on tour. The duo has met 12 times on the court in competitive tournaments and both have recorded six wins. An all-important seventh win is not the only thing on the line as the silverware awaits the champion, but who will dominate the rivalry?

Gauff has picked up some big wins in recent months against Sabalenka. She defeated the World No. 1 at the Roland Garros final last year and had also defeated Sabalenka en route to her WTA Finals triumph in 2024. However, neither of them has ever picked up a positive string of momentum against one another, making it a very even and eagerly anticipated clash at the Miami Open.

Sabalenka won their last meeting at the WTA Finals in November, and there’s a likelihood that Gauff will win the upcoming final in Florida given their rivalry. But nothing is known yet.
