Carlos Alcaraz vs. Joao Fonseca: Match Preview
Alcaraz is bidding to win his third title of the season. He kicked off his campaign for the 2026 season in an emphatic fashion, winning his career’s first Australian Open title by upsetting 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, prior to which, he played in the longest semifinal in the tournament’s history. He overcame Alexander Zverev in a five-hour, 27-minute semifinal.

The victory over Nole made him the youngest man in the Open Era to win seven Grand Slam titles as well as complete the Career Grand Slam. He continued his winning ways at the Qatar Open, where he breezed past Arthur Fils to clinch his first title in the tournament. The 22-year-old, however, failed to win his third Indian Wells title. Eventual runner-up Daniil Medvedev ended the Spaniard’s 16-match winning streak in the semifinals.
Alcaraz has so far won eight Masters 1000 titles, last winning a title of his level at the 2025 Cincinnati Masters after receiving a walkover from Sinner. Last year, he won three Masters 1000 trophies (in Cincinnati, Monte Carlo, and Rome).
Fonseca, on the other hand, has never reached the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 tournament. His fourth-round appearance in this year’s Indian Wells (lost to Sinner) was his best performance in an event of this level.
Because of an injury problem, Fonseca was forced to skip two tournaments at the start of this season and later suffered a first-round exit at the Australian Open, losing in four sets to Eliot Spizzirri. The 19-year-old then failed to defend his title at the Argentina Open, where he defeated home favorite Francisco Cerundolo last year to win his first tour-level title.
In his home tournament, the Rio Open, he lost to Ignacio Buse in the round of 16, but he went on to win doubles with compatriot Marcelo Melo. Before scheduling his match against Alcaraz, Fonseca defeated Fabian Marozsan in three sets.
Carlos Alcaraz vs. Joao Fonseca: Match Prediction
Alcaraz will be chasing his second title in Miami. In his second appearance in 2022, he defeated three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud to win his career’s first Masters 1000 title. But since then, he has yet to reach another final. Last year, David Goffin came from a set down to knock him out in the opening round.

Fonseca is competing in Miami for the second time. Last year, after defeating Learner Tien and Ugo Humbert, he lost to Alex de Minaur in the third round.
Even though Fonseca is backed by many to become a formidable player in the future and challenge the dominance of Sincaraz, the seven-time Grand Slam champion will be entering the match as the favorite to win thanks to the wealth of experience he gained in his short career.
Match prediction: Carlos Alcaraz to win in three sets.
