The college football playoff final proved to be a roller coaster game for Miami running back Mark Fletcher Jr. Fletcher first won praise for using sign language to thank the Almighty, but then nearly found himself in the referee’s bad books after a brain-fade moment.

Miami trailed by ten points heading into the fourth and final quarter of the season. Fortunately, they ended the previous quarter in an advantageous position. Miami quarterback Carson Beck snapped the ball and passed it on to Fletcher, who lurked right next to him at the line of scrimmage.

Fletcher side-stepped the Indiana offensive line and scored a walk-in touchdown. Instead of celebrating, Fletcher used sign language to say, “Jesus Loves You.”

That was his second TD in the fixture. His first score came shortly after the halftime break. Beck passed him the ball, and he turned it into a 57-yard touchdown run.

It was a historic run by Fletcher. According to ESPN Insights, he passed former Ohio State and Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott for the most career rushing yards in College Football Playoff history.

Mark Fletcher Jr. beefs with Indiana players after the final whistle

Fletcher’s contributions kept Miami within one score of Indiana’s total. However, the Hoosiers quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner, Fernando Mendoza, dealt the killer blow nine minutes before the end.

Miami hustled to restore parity, but in the process, they made a costly mistake. Beck’s final pass in college was picked off by Indiana corner Jamari Sharpe.

The game ended 27-21. Fletcher had 18 total touches on the ball for 120 all-purpose yards and two scores. However, right after the referee called the curtain on the 2025 season, Fletcher was caught beefing with Hoosiers’ Tyrique Tucker on live TV. Fletcher even swung a right hook at Tucker before the Miami staff de-escalated the tension.

Moments later, the same Fletcher was seen embracing Mendoza in front of a horde of reporters waiting to interview both athletes.

Fletcher capped off an incredible year with 216 carries for 1192 yards and 14 touchdowns, along with 17 receptions for 140 yards and two TDs in 14 games for the Canes. According to NFL Draft Buzz, Fletcher won’t be making the jump to the NFL just yet. He plans to return to Miami for the 2026 season.

The same can not be said about Beck. He’s exhausted his college eligibility and has to try his luck in the April draft in Pittsburgh. Beck began his career in Georgia and won two Nattys as backup to Stetson Bennett (now with the Los Angeles Rams). He transferred to Miami ahead of the 2025 campaign to replace the outgoing Cam Ward (the Titans’ first overall draft pick). Beck went 37-5 in six years (redshirted his freshman season).
