On the day the Dallas Cowboys returned to winning ways by beating the Carolina Panthers 30-14, star pass rusher Micah Parsons dropped a concerning hint about his future at Arlington. The win on Sunday improved the Cowboys’ chances of staying in the hunt for a wild card spot at the end of the regular season.

However, the chance of playing football post-January is below 3%. On top of it, the Cowboys have injuries to several key players and a few playing on their contract years. One of them is Micah Parsons.

The All-Pro linebacker has only one year left on his four-year, $17 million rookie deal. He wants to continue with the Cowboys post the 2024 season, but there’s always the possibility of leaving the teams to fight for silverware somewhere else.

I understand how that business side goes. There are no hard feelings in this business, whether I’m here or anywhere else. Obviously, I’ve stated that I want to be here. But at the end of the day, I understand the business side.

Parsons recorded three tackles, 1 assist, four pass deflections, and 2.0 sacks against the Panthers on Sunday. He applied six pressures on Panthers quarterback Bryce Young and even assisted on a fumble.

Can the Dallas Cowboys afford to keep Micah Parsons?

The former first-round pick is the heart and soul of the Cowboys defense. He keeps the opposing quarterbacks on their toes. If they want to challenge for a Super Bowl anytime soon, keeping the Penn State graduate has to be a top priority.

Back in October, owner Jerry Jones revealed that they never discussed trading Parsons.

No. Absolutely not. We want Micah Parsons. He’s integral to our future. We (Jerry, Stephen Jones, Will McClay) haven’t had one conversation ever about not having Micah Pasons on the team. Ever.

Even Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones voiced the same opinion about Parsons’ future recently. Jones revealed that the Cowboys organization can’t think of themselves with Parsons.

I can’t imagine there’s a scenario where he’s not wearing a star on his helmet.

However, at the same time, Jones hinted that there’s a dilemma in the front office as they are short on funds. As per Over The Cap, the Cowboys currently have $19.7 million in cap space after signing two big contracts with quarterback Dak Prescott ($60 million a year) and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb ($34 million a year).

It would be irresponsible if every year you don’t look at the full body of work and the big picture and how those guys fit into that big picture.

Parsons has a cap hit of $5.6 million in 2024 and is expected to earn north of $17 million from his new deal. There are rumors that the NFL will increase the salary cap in 2025, but whether it will be enough to cover his expenses is another matter. Regardless of the money situation, it will not take away his skills from him.

I’m just gonna keep playing hard while I’m here. If I’m here for the next 5-6 years, I’m gonna keep playing hard then too. Ain’t nothing really gonna make a difference, Micah is gonna play hard.

Parsons missed a few games through injuries midway through the season but still has respectable numbers to boast. In ten games he lodged a combined 32 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, one passed deflection, and one forced fumble.
