Jerry Jones ended up on the front pages of sports publications after handing out blockbuster deals to two of his top players. This season, he and his Dallas Cowboys are again in the news as fans and media wait to see what star pass rusher Micah Parsons gets.
Parsons has been giving out mixed signals throughout the course of this past season. Initially, the 25-year-old’s words indicated he was willing to take less if that meant the team can sign good players to help them compete. But as the season carried on, other news started to bother him.
Rumors started to fly around that the Cowboys were fielding trade calls. He hit back at those rumors and argued that he still wanted to stay. After all that, he now wants to become the highest paid non-QB in the league. Keeping that in mind, he posted this message on X earlier today.
Facts!! David is the best and I will not be doing any deal without David Mulugheta involved! Like anyone with good sense I hired experts for a reason. There is no one I trust more when it comes to negotiating contracts than David! There will be no backdoors in this contract negotiation.

This was in response to a Cowboys beat writer revealing that Jerry Jones disrespected Micah Parsons‘ agent. Now the pass rusher doubles down on his intention to deal through his agent, David Mulugheta. Jones’ words seem to have made matters worse.
What did Jerry Jones say about Micah Parsons’ agent?
The Athletic’s John Machota and other reporters waited at the NFL owners’ meeting to speak with Jerry Jones. He asked the 82-year-old billionaire about Parsons’ agent David Mulugheta’s involvement in the negotiations, to which he said.
The agent is not a factor here, or something to worry about. And I don’t know his name. The agent doesn’t have one thing to do with what we’re doing when we get on the football field against a team, Micah does.
Jerry Jones said
Jones claimed he was negotiating with Micah Parsons directly. He believes it is the pass rusher who does all the work on the field, therefore he is the best person to negotiate his value. This statement gave the idea that the Cowboys owner was seemingly disrespecting Mulugheta.
Jerry Jones says he doesn’t worry about agents in contract talks. He’s been having conversations directly with Micah Parsons about his next deal. He said Micah is one of a very few people who have his cell phone number pic.twitter.com/DCORGH7z7v

David Mulugheta is one of the most respected agents in the NFL. As the President of Athletes First, he has negotiated quite a few breakout deals. Without him in the picture, the businessman in Jones can drive the price down. But now that Parsons has responded, it throws the negotiations into a different direction.
Can Micah Parsons earn more by ditching his agent?
In today’s day and age, most of the athletes and coaches hire agents to help them negotiate. Those agents do take a commission for their efforts, which is capped at 3% as per NFL rules. If Micah Parsons lands a $40 million annual salary for four years, he will sign a $160 million contract.

This means his agent, David Mulugheta, will pocket $4.8 million from the entire contract. In Parsons’ situation, if he negotiated the deal himself, he will be richer by $4.8 million. That is the method Laremy Tunsil employed to negotiate a good deal for himself when he was with the Houston Texans.
But not everyone is good at representing themselves. There are pitfalls most athletes are not aware of. Even coaches, such as Parsons’ former head coach Mike McCarthy, changed agents knowing how difficult it is to get a good deal.
He did not end up staying with the Dallas Cowboys after apparently not being happy with the duration of his next contract. But it goes to show that dealing with Jerry Jones needs some patience, and an agent can make or break a deal.
