This offseason, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said plenty that fans didn’t like, but this time, he seems to have offended his own players. Judging from their reactions, Jones might be regretting picking up a microphone on Thursday.
In a recent press conference, the Cowboys owner was asked about the progress in contract negotiations with star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who has been holding out from training camp with the regular season just a month away. However, Jones doesn’t believe that resolving Lamb’s contract is urgent at the moment, according to The Athletic’s Jon Machota.
Lamb was quick to respond to the video when it surfaced on the internet. And he retweeted Machota’s post with just a single word caption, “lol.” Amid this drama with the Cowboys, linebacker Micah Parsons showed solidarity with Lamb and retweeted his remark.
Parsons, who is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, is also eligible for an extension like Lamb. However, Parsons’ situation is not as urgent, as he still has two years remaining on his contract. Nonetheless, the way the Cowboys have been handling the contract negotiations for Pro Bowl receiver CeeDee Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott has certainly been an eye-opener for Parsons.
That’s why he has shown full support for both players, even at the risk of potentially straining his relationship with the Cowboys, considering he will be in a similar situation with the team in 2025.
CeeDee Lamb faces uncertain future after Pro Bowl season
The star wide receiver is coming off a remarkable 2023 season, which earned him his third Pro Bowl selection after logging 1,749 yards, 135 receptions, and 14 touchdowns. He also played a key role in leading the Cowboys to the NFC East title and advancing to the playoffs as the second-seeded team in the conference.
That’s why, as contract talks begin, Lamb has high expectations for his team to reward him well. However, Jones has previously stated that he expects more from the players. Given his recent comments about the urgency of handling the extension, it is anticipated that Lamb may not return to the Cowboys.
Having said that, the Cowboys have also removed Lamb from the active roster and placed him on the Reserved/Did Not Report list, just ahead of the preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams and a month before the regular season begins.
