The Dallas Cowboys’ offseason has gotten more interesting than their Netflix productions, America’s Sweethearts, and America’s Team. The offseason, marked by the contract situation of the Pennsylvanian defensive edge Micah Parsons.
Parsons, who was drafted in 2021 from Penn State, has been selected for the Pro Bowl four times in his career so far. In 63 starts, Parsons has recorded 256 tackles and 52.5 sacks. In 2024, the Cowboys picked up the fifth-year option on his contract. However, it was widely thought that the management and the player would sign a contract extension ahead of the new preseason.
Despite the drama, there were strong hopes that Parsons would sign a deal sometime soon. Two days ago, the whole scenario shifted. Adam Schefter reported that the deal has gone backward rather than forward in the past few weeks. The scenario has worsened since.
On Friday morning, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported that Parsons is “weighing drastic options.” These drastic measures reportedly involve either requesting a trade or formally ending his relationship with the team amid ongoing contract disputes.
Russini noted that miscommunication is the primary reason behind the worsening circumstances. Micah Parsons had direct conversations with the owner, Jerry Jones, which the team considered as negotiations. Meanwhile, the Parsons camp thought they were just talks and not actual negotiations.
Among the key issues: Micah Parsons spoke directly with Jerry Jones over multiple days in the spring. The team believed those conversations were negotiations and that it had a deal, multiple league sources said.

The nonchalant attitude from Jones and the Cowboys actually tracks. In early April, Jones claimed that he had directly interacted with Micah and didn’t even know the name of his agent. Parsons blasted the Cowboys, stating that there would be no deal without the involvement of his agent, David Mulugheta.
Micah Parsons posted a tweet with the headline “one last time” amid contract struggles
Micah Parsons may be heading into his final season with the Dallas Cowboys. A recent tweet by Parsons has sparked concern among fans after he posted a GIF in response to a training camp photo of him and teammate Trevon Diggs.

The tweet gave the impression that Parsons believes this could be the last year the two play together in Dallas.

The timing of the post adds to the growing tension between Parsons and the organization. Parsons has spent the entire offseason pushing for a new contract. While he did report to training camp, he has not taken part in any drills.
His absence from practice is believed to be part of a “hold-in,” a move players use to show up without fully participating until a new deal is signed. Despite the conflict, Parsons has made it clear he still wants to stay. In a July interview, he told reporters. Parsons addressed the situation back then:
I want to be here. At the end of the day, they sign the checks. Let’s see if they want me to be here.
Parsons has earned the right to ask for a top-tier contract. He has made the Pro Bowl in each of his first four seasons and is a two-time first-team All-Pro. While he has yet to win Defensive Player of the Year, he has been a finalist for the award three times. The high scale contract extensions of Myles Garrett, Maxx Crosby, and T.J. Watt have also added much pressure to the kerfuffle.
