New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell gave fans a moment to laugh about, after attempting to take a review after getting bowled out in a 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) encounter. The hilarious incident occurred in a match between Bracewell’s MI New York and San Francisco Unicorns.
Batting first at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, the Unicorns posted a massive total of 264/4, in their 20 overs. Stand-in captain Matthew Short starred with the bat, scoring an impressive knock of 91 runs off just 43 deliveries. He was assisted by fellow Australian Jake Fraser-McGurk, who scored 64 off 26 balls, Sanjay Krishnamurthi‘s 27 off 16, and all-rounder Hassan Khan‘s quickfire knock of 31 off nine balls.
San Francisco Unicorns’ four-match winning streak was threatened by the strong MI New York batting unit at the onset. Quinton de Kock and Monank Patel put on a decisive show, stitching a 119-run opening stand. However, wickets soon started to fall, as MINY’s chase ran way off track. A middle-order collapse led to MINY losing the match by a margin of 47 runs, as they ended with a score of 199/6 on the board.
Although it was a disappointing night for the MINY fans and players, Michael Bracewell did give them a hilarious moment with a bizarre on-field error. The 34-year-old, coming out to bat in the 17th over, after Quinton de Kock untimely wicket, got dismissed on a duck. Bracewell was bowled out by Romario Shepherd off a length delivery that crashed into the stumps, while he tried to swipe it across the line.
Ever seen a batter (accidentally) try to review after getting bowled?

However, Michael Bracewell, instead of walking off the pitch, strangely signaled for a DRS review, after the on-field umpire raised his finger. He had indeed failed to realize that the ball had crashed onto the stumps, and confusingly thought that he was being given out LBW. The San Francisco players then amusingly pointed towards the stumps to remind Bracewell of what had happened.

Nonetheless, it left him red-faced, as he walked back to the pavilion with an awkward smile on his face after having realized his casual error in judgement. Michael Bracewell’s MLC blunder reminded fans of Shoaib Bashir’s dismissal in a Test match against India, last year. The England spinner attempted to take a DRS review despite being bowled out by Ravindra Jadeja, as he had thought that the ball went straight into the wicket-keeper’s hands.
ICYMI: Shoaib Bashir was spotted requesting a DRS review despite being bowled on that delivery in Dharamsala. Later, he discovered his mistake.

Meanwhile, coming back to MINY’s Michael Bracewell, his first ball dismissal against SFU marks only the third time in his T20 career that he has been dismissed on a duck. The 34-year-old had a day to forget with the ball as well, as he returned with dismal figures of 0/35 in his two-over spell.
San Francisco Unicorns Lead 2025 MLC Standings, Following Convincing Win Over MI New York
Half-way through the ongoing 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season, San Francisco Unicorns have dominated the standings, as they remain on top of the table with five wins out of five. SFU extended their unbeaten-streak with a 47-run victory over MI New York, recently.

The Unicorns have interestingly scored 200+ totals in four out of the five matches that they have played this season. Their success is reflected in the individual statistics, with SFU players topping both the highest run-scorers and highest wicket-takers lists. Opener Finn Allen leads the run-scorers’ list with 294 runs in four matches, while Haris Rauf tops the bowling charts with 12 wickets in five matches.
