When the Arizona Cardinals signed Kyler Murray in one of the highest-paid deals in 2022, things took a surprising turn, and the quarterback failed to live up to the expectations. This compelled the franchise to use the “homework clause” from Murray’s contract, which created a rift between both parties.
For context, the homework clause states that Murray has to spend at least four hours studying the opposing team. However, the quarterback reportedly did not feel compelled to study his game plan and stand up to the expectations of being a franchise quarterback.
Last season, when he returned after recovering from his Achilles injury for half of the season, the Cardinals finished at 4-13. But there appears some change in quarterback Murray as he is putting in an unconventionally high effort on the field, aiming for a bounce back in the 2024 season– as his teammate RB Michael Carter shared.
The more I’ve gotten to know him, I don’t think he ever leaves [the Cardinals training facility]. I’m in the building right now — I don’t think he leaves here. I don’t. “He’s always in here. He’s the freakin’ first person in. I’m sure he’s the last person out. Last week, one time I was like, ‘you know what, let me try to be the first person in.’said Carter during his appearance on the ‘Bickley and Marotta Show‘
Carter further stated that he believes Murray is committed to establishing himself as a determined franchise quarterback as he is chasing excellence.
Kyler Murray defends his work ethic under scrutiny in Cardinals’ contract
The homework clause in Murray’s contract stated that the four hours of studying time wouldn’t be counted if the quarterback was “watching television, playing video games or browsing the internet.” This created a notion that the Cardinals do not trust their quarterback and raised questions about Murray’s work ethic.
That’s when the quarterback came in his defense, saying that he ‘felt’ disrespected by the antics of Cardinals as it reflected their mistrust of him for not being capable of doing his job.

When he felt his work ethic and dedication to his team were being questioned, Murray had a few things to say in his defense.
I refuse to let my work ethic, my preparation be questioned. I’ve put an incomprehensible amount of time and blood, sweat, tears, and work into what I do.Kyler Murray said
Fortunately, all the allegations against him were later proved wrong and he seemed to have the support of fans as he aimed for a bounce back.
