Michael Chandler is still a UFC star, but ‘Iron’ is in need of a win. Chandler is fresh off a lopsided loss at the UFC 309 PPV co-headliner. He also spent the better part of two years waiting for Conor McGregor to return to action for roughly zero payoff. Now, Chandler goes from ‘Sweet Jesus’ to “Street Jesus” gangster as a potential opponent. Namely – Jorge Masvidal.
The former Bellator lightweight kingpin has provided plenty of entertainment inside the Octagon. But he’s lost two in a row after a lopsided battering by Charles Oliveira at UFC 309 PPV. Michael Chandler recently opened up and invited fans to poke his brains in a social media Q&A session. Chandler, 38, did veer that the Conor McGregor ‘money fight’ is still the biggest. But Jorge Masvidal is also a good change.
It’s a fight which makes a lot of sense. Both Chandler and the recently unretired Jorge Masvidal are popular stars. But neither is at the peak of their powers heading into 2025. Masvidal has lost four in a row; five counting his 10-round majority decision loss in the Fanmio Pay-per-view boxing headliner. Masvidal responded positively, provided the fight takes place at the UFC’s April event in Miami, Florida.

Say word and it’s go April Miami

Chandler himself might need some time away after the systematic “Do Bronx” beatdown. But there are clear indications that Jorge Masvidal is looking for such a legacy billing off a win-less streak and ring rust. The UFC 303 kickoff presser cancellation also saw Chandler training back in Florida, so that’s no biggie. Other than fight news, he had some other things to get off his chest.
Michael Chandler clarifies the comments on Charles Oliveira
During his X truth-telling forum, Chandler addressed some recent comments that made him the butt of MMA cliques’ jokes. UFC 309 PPV wasn’t the first time he’d faced Oliveira. ‘Do Bronx’ knocked him out via TKO at 0:19 of round 2 when they met for lightweight gold at UFC 262 2021. So, it’s 0-2 for him.
Yet, Michael Chandler recently iterated on a good day he’d beat him ‘nine times out of 10‘! As one would have guessed, the MMA fans were ready to all but rage burst the slander on their fan-favorite Oliveira. Chandler has finally explained what his point was after being roasted by online trolls.
The fight marked Chandler’s return to competition after a two-year lay-off in which he waited for a fight with Conor McGregor that never came. His welcome back was a crude one as he said he suffered leg damage in the opening frame which contributed to his poor night. However, “Iron” is nothing else if not trying to get to the top.
Despite losing four of his six UFC fights, Chandler has reasons to be optimistic about the future. He said he thinks the fight with McGregor will happen in 2025. Even if it doesn’t, he’s a proper PPV spotlight in the eyes of the brass. Hence, given an unlikely trilogy does happen after UFC 309, Chandler has plans.
