Former Dallas Cowboys player and one of the greats to have played in the jersey, Michael Irvin, sounded off on the current drama in the Cowboys camp. The drama, revolving around the management and linebacker Micah Parsons, has come to a tipping point.

Parsons, drafted from Penn State four years back, has withheld from practice as the team hasn’t concluded the contract extension. The Cowboys, who gave Parsons a rookie contract in 2021, picked up his fifth-year option last year. The negotiations, which were thought to be smooth-sailing, hit a roadblock recently.

After a few reports emerged on the stand that Parsons is considering a trade, the player came out with a lengthy write-up requesting the trade. Parsons claimed that the team had disrespected Parsons as well as his agent on multiple counts, and he wanted out of the team.

The whole camaraderie has deeply worried the fans and even former players, and other stakeholders. Michael Irvin, who represented the Cowboys throughout his entire career, admonished the management in a scathing comment. Irvin targeted the general manager and the owner of the team, Jerry Jones.

In light of this, Irvin has called out Jones in a YouTube video published on his page.

My mind starts right away just saying, ‘Jerry, what the hell is this?’ I told you guys this was going to happen. Micah Parsons came in with the right mindset. ‘I want to be a Cowboy. I want to be here forever,’ and Jerry should have taken hold of that and kept it going and got something done.

Jones has been quite apathetic and defiant with his words and actions. The media have termed him cocky, while the fans have quite a variety of selections about his attitude, ranging from ‘cheap‘ to ‘plantation owner mindset‘.

Michael Irvin has an idea on what Jerry Jones should do

In an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, Michael Irvin also suggested a plan for Jerry Jones. Irvin presented that the Cowboys should offer the defensive edge a similar deal to the one that Kansas City gave quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Irvin claimed that if he were in Jerry Jones’ shoes, he would offer Parsons a 10-year $450 million deal.

What I think they should do with Micah Parsons is make him that generational type player. Do the same thing with Micah Parsons as Kansas City Chiefs have done with Patrick Mahomes. If I’m Jerry, I’m stepping out right now and trying to give Micah Parsons a 10-year $450 million deal.

Irvin explained that the contract could be spread out over 10 years, allowing the team to place a significant portion on the back end to manage the salary cap while still giving Micah Parsons his money upfront. He noted that the team could always restructure his contract later to make room for others.

However, Irvin’s plan has a lot of issues, especially from a business standpoint. While it may offer short-term cap relief, it ties the franchise to a massive long-term financial commitment that could become burdensome if Parsons’ performance declines or injuries arise.

The idea of back-loading payments also risks creating dead money issues later, limiting flexibility in future roster-building. Although restructuring is an option, there’s a slight issue there. The front-loading cash to appease the player now may strain liquidity or reduce the team’s leverage in future negotiations.
