The No. 10 Miami Hurricanes soared to their first win of the season on Sunday, defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 27-24. The Hurricanes’ win grabbed major online attention as they broke an eight-year drought of no wins against an AP Top 10 team.
Carson Beck shone in his debut for the Hurricanes, throwing for 205 yards and 2 touchdowns from 20 completions. One of Beck’s passes landed in the hands of CJ Daniels, whose marvelous skill to receive the ball quickly became a Catch of the Year candidate.
The Miami defense also came through, especially the defensive ends Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor, who came in clutch at the last moments. The Fighting Irish had one last chance with 1:04 remaining to beat the Hurricanes before Bain and Mesidor came up with sacks on back-to-back plays.
The win was extra sweet as the Hurricanes had support on the sidelines. Jimmy Johnson, Michael Irvin, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Jim Kelly, Andre Johnson, and Devin Hester were on the sidelines, cheering on the young athletes. The exciting result was welcomed with whole hearts by the fans as well as the legends on the sidelines.
Irvin, who has been a consistent presence on the Miami sidelines for some time, was caught on video Sunday night celebrating wildly as Miami sealed the win.

The former Dallas Cowboys wideout attended the University of Miami, where he played for the Hurricanes from 1984-87. Irvin was a standout player in college under coach Jimmy Johnson, who set many school records. Although a few were broken by future athletes, some records are still standing. He also earned three All-American honors, first-team in his sophomore year and second-team in both freshman and junior years.
Notre Dame, Texas among the fallen giants of Week 1 of College Football
The first week of college football was a pretty interesting affair. The week started with a lower-ranked Iowa State Cyclones overpowering the Kansas State Wildcats by a margin of 24-21 at their home ground. The Cyclones, ranked 22, however, have defeated the Wildcats in five of the last six seasons.

South Florida ended its nine-year wait for a win against a ranked team on Friday when the Bulls steamrolled the Boise State Broncos. The Broncos stood no chance against their opponents, led by Byrum Brown, who ran for two touchdowns. The Bulls, who had an 18-game winless streak against Top 25-ranked teams, shot into the limelight with the 34-7 victory over the Broncos.
Not only Bulls rout the Broncos, but they might have also dethroned them from the Top 25. They were already hanging by a fine thread at the last position. The Army also went down as the Tarleton State Texans secured a narrow win after two overtimes. The win was Texans’ second-ever win against an FBS team.
The biggest storyline of the week was, however, the Texas Longhorns. Longhorns, ranked No. 1, had high expectations, mostly due to the hype around their quarterback Arch Manning. Manning, who’s part of a family with a deep legacy in the sport, failed to perform against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Manning has a completion rate of around 56.6% and threw one touchdown and an interception. The Buckeyes secured a 14-7 win over the Longhorns in a game dominated by the defense.
The fourth-placed Clemson Tigers also fell to the ninth-ranked Louisiana State University.
