- Michael Jordan dismisses the GOAT debate, stating it creates animosity among fans.
- He emphasizes the importance of appreciating contributions from all eras in basketball.
- Jordan praises LeBron James for his remarkable career and expresses mutual respect between them.
There is no doubt that Michael Jordan and LeBron James are the two most important entities in the never-ending GOAT debate of NBA. Along with them, some toss the late Kobe Bryant in that ring.
Even though some argue that the latter was not the player during his first three championship wins, as he was in the later stages of his career, the very man who helped Bryant win those titles at the Los Angeles Lakers, Shaquille O’Neal, labels his teammate as the GOAT.
Despite those arguments, the debate is generally centered around ‘His Airness’, and the league’s all-time leading scorer. As the latter continues to rack up statistical accolades that might never be broken again, fans from both sides continue to argue about their accomplishments.
In those arguments, it has become evident that fans for and against either Michael Jordan or LeBron James often tend to belittle their respective eras. That is not something that has sat well with the Chicago Bulls great.
The GOAT term is never going to be something that I ever will get high or low about. It just doesn’t exist with me… The beauty of the game of basketball that a player, after a previous player, has evolved the game further. But don’t then now use that against the player that actually taught you the game or that you learned from… I think it creates animosity.

The North Carolina native answered this on the much-criticized MJ: Insights to Excellence, which is aired on NBC. It seems the six-time champion does not want to be associated with the GOAT debate, especially if it undermines the contributions of past eras.
Michael Jordan explains why former players are bitter about current generation
As the conversation continued, Michael Jordan went on to justify why certain former players have taken offense to the GOAT debate, especially when there are critics berating their era.
I would have loved to play against LeBron and Kobe in my prime… But we’ll never be able to know that… You do have certain players that do have animosity because of the forgottenness of their contributions has been to the game of basketball. It is an empty comparison.

The 63-year-old believes that such comparisons leave former players, who have helped build the league to where it is now, with a bad taste in their mouths.
That is why they do their best to defend their eras, and even go to extreme extents, which often involves some harsh words that tend to cause more division than they should.
Jordan reiterated that he does not give a hoot about the GOAT debate, and instead wants fans of all generations to admire what every player has done to elevate the game.
Michael Jordan gives LeBron James his flowers
As Jordan continued to talk about how it is important to appreciate and value every player who has helped to elevate the game, the five-time league MVP pivoted to give LeBron James his flowers.

I think LeBron has had an unbelievable career. I admire him for what he’s done.

The NASCAR team co-owner, who has seen his team help add another three-peat to his resume, gave the Los Angeles Lakers superstar the ultimate praise he could get.
The two have always been pitted against each other, even though James and Jordan have proved that they have the ultimate respect for each other. The Akron native has been facing some heat of late, but the Bulls great’s words should be enough to deter his fans from going on the attack every time the GOAT debate comes up.
