Michael Jordan moved to tears as he opens a clinic in his hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina alongside his mother
Michael Jordan never forgets his hometown of North Carolina. The place where he forged himself to become the greatest basketball player ever. His hometown is also where he learned to be of help when it mattered. Therefore, as he opened a clinic in his hometown of Wilmington with a sizeable donation, he was moved to tears while sharing the podium with his mother.
His hometown of Wilmington, North Carolina, needed affordable health care. Therefore, he donated $10 million, so that a clinic could be opened.
When the families are not able to support, we're there to support. You don't have any money, it doesn't matter. We're gonna do what we can to support you. Cause that's what happened to me, that's what I got it from. This is home.-- This is where I came from. No matter how you see Michael Jordan, this is where I started. I'm always gonna be a part of it.Michael Jordan said while on the dais
He was moved to tears as he finished his speech. The 61-year-old might be the most recognizable sportsman in the world, but he knows that his hometown made him become that.
The 6-time NBA champion is no stranger to providing help to those who are in need. Having partnered with Novant Healthcare in the past to open clinics, Michael Jordan wanted one in his hometown as well. This clinic will provide affordable healthcare for those who are uninsured or underinsured.
Michael Jordan’s donations to charity have increased with his wealth
Ever since Jordan came into the NBA, he was a bona fide superstar. Along with that stardom came millions of dollars in both salary and his deal with Nike. However, a young superstar would like to spend on his interests. That is how he ended up spending on cars and houses.
Then, as he grew older and made more money, he realized that there were people who needed help. This led the 5-time MVP to donate to Make-A-Wish Foundation since 1989. Last year during his 60th birthday, he made the largest donation to the Foundation ever. After selling the Charlotte Hornets for $3 billion dollars, he has ramped up his efforts to help those who are in need.
This clinic opening in his hometown is an example of that effort. Michael Jordan was a basketball great, and now aims to be great among the people who helped him grow.
