Ex-England skipper Michael Vaughan is known for his contentious remarks, and he most recently branded South Africa the ‘stupidest’ team at the 2026 T20 World Cup. This remark was aimed at their tactical approach during the Super Eight stages, and not their playing ability.

South Africa was one of the strongest sides to have entered the T20 World Cup, remaining undefeated throughout the Group Stages and Super 8s. One of the Proteas’ notable wins came against Afghanistan, whom they defeated in a thrilling double Super Over. At the same venue, they also defeated defending champions India by 76 runs, while also ending the Men in Blues’ 12-match winning streak in T20 WCs.

South Africa followed it up with a dominant nine-wicket victory over the West Indies in their second Super 8 clash, securing a semi-final berth. However, the Proteas’ victory run came to a halt at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where the ‘knock-out curse’ struck and they eventually lost to New Zealand.

Struggling against the Kiwis’ disciplined bowling, the Proteas managed a modest 169/8. Finn Allen then delivered a masterclass, scoring a century off just 33 balls to help his team chase the target down in only 12.5 overs.

Michael Vaughan, days after having criticized IPL-owned Hundred teams over rumors of not picking Pakistan cricketers at the auction, has stirred controversy once again. In a wild jab, the 51-year-old argued that South Africa made a ‘stupid’ tactical blunder by beating the Windies in their Super Eight clash.

He controversially suggested that if the Proteas had ‘allowed’ West Indies to beat them, India would have effectively been knocked out before the semi-finals. He said on Stick to Cricket:

I tell you, who I think is the stupidest team of the tournament? South Africa. Because if South Africa had allowed the West Indies to beat them in the Super 8s, India would have been knocked out.

He added that South Africa allowed the ‘juggernaut’ to go on, while India seized the opportunity to defeat Zimbabwe and the West Indies. Vaughan suggested that eliminating the favorite teams early on is the best path to winning the World Cup.

Although India’s Net Run Rate suffered greatly after their first Super Eight loss, the defending champions quickly regained momentum through outstanding individual performances by Sanju Samson and Jasprit Bumrah, ultimately seeing them through.

By winning that game, they [South Africa] allowed the juggernaut to go on… Look, these things shouldn’t happen and usually don’t happen. I’m just saying that if you want to win a World Cup, the best way is to eliminate the best team early.

Many did not receive the former England captain’s comments well, calling them contrary to the spirit of sportsmanship. Moreover, a loss to the Windies would have complicated South Africa’s path to the semi-finals, potentially making their match against Zimbabwe a must-win.

Michael Vaughan was full of praise for ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, following his heroics in the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup against New Zealand. The 51-year-old even compared Bumrah to a host of football legends.

Cricket fans witnessed another Jasprit Bumrah classic in the T20 WC final, delivering a remarkable spell of 4/15 to help his team triumph by 96 runs. The 32-year-old finished the tournament by picking up 14 wickets in eight matches at an average of 12.43, at a respectable economy rate of 6.21. Bumrah continued from where he left off during the 2024 T20 WC, where he won the Player of the Tournament award. 

The performance also took his tally to 40 wickets across all his T20 World Cup appearances, the most by a pace bowler. Vaughan made a bold claim about the 32-year-old bowler, labeling Bumrah as the finest bowler he had seen in years. Vaughan’s praise even extended to comparing Bumrah’s influence to that of footballing icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in their respective national teams.

I reckon, if you put Jasprit Bumrah in English cricket, they win it [T20 World Cup]. Probably like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo…

He further claimed that if England had a player of Jasprit Bumrah’s caliber, they would have performed exceptionally well. This opinion was immediately agreed upon by the other panelists on the Stick to Cricket podcast, including his former teammate, Mark Butcher.
