Mike McCarthy is “aware” that the final regular season game could be his last with the Cowboys
Mike McCarthy has a 49-34 record in his five years after replacing Jason Garrett as the Dallas Cowboys head coach.

Mike McCarthy, Dallas Cowboys HC, stands on the verge of his contract expiration and a potential bid adieu after five years in the Big D. The Cowboys despite being one of the most consistent teams in the last three years failed to qualify for the playoff for the second time in the McCarthy era. McCarthy and the Cowboys had a misfortunate season in 2020 in similar circumstances of Dak Prescott being on the sidelines.
After parting ways with HC Jason Garrett, the Dallas Cowboys conducted a thorough interview process for his replacement. Mike McCarthy was interviewed for the position in an extensive 12-hour meeting with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, executive vice president Stephen Jones, and chief sales and marketing officer Jerry Jones Jr. On January 7, 2020, the Cowboys officially named McCarthy as their new head coach, making him the ninth head coach in the franchise’s history since its founding in 1960.
In an interview with Athletic.com, Mike McCarthy broke the silence on his last game on the sides with the Dallas outfit. The Dallas Cowboys vs Washington Commanders game takes place on the home turf, the same stadium where he led the Green Bay Packers to the Super Bowl in 2011.
Mike McCarthy’s contract with the Dallas Cowboys is reportedly set to expire on January 14, nine days after their season finale. As stipulated by NFL rules, this timeline gives the Cowboys an exclusive negotiation window of just over a week. However, it also creates a soft deadline for the team to reach a new agreement or risk losing McCarthy to another franchise.
Once the regular season concludes, other teams can request permission from the Cowboys to interview McCarthy for coaching positions, with Dallas retaining the right to approve or deny such requests. After January 14, when McCarthy’s contract officially expires, he will be free to interview with other teams and accept job offers at any time, without requiring permission from the Cowboys.
Jeremy Fowler predicts Mike McCarthy to join Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears is yet another team with poor records this season. After drafting Caleb Williams first overall in the recent draft this season, the Bears started 4-2 to the season before a steep fall from grace. The Chicago Bears have also suffered from coaching struggles, with OC Shane Waldron and HC Matt Eberflus finding exits mid-season.
While Cowboys owner Jerry Jones continues to express strong support for Mike McCarthy, the veteran head coach may explore opportunities with another team if Dallas decides not to retain him after this season. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, McCarthy “could set his sights” on the Chicago Bears’ head coaching position if he parts ways with the Cowboys.

The Bears, currently navigating a turbulent season marked by a 10-game losing streak following a promising 4-2 start, could benefit from McCarthy’s steadying presence. With Matt Eberflus’ tenure ending and interim head coach Thomas Brown unable to turn things around, McCarthy might not be the flashiest candidate available, but his experience and leadership could provide much-needed stability for a franchise in desperate need of a reset.
