Dallas Cowboys, one of the most consistent teams through the last three seasons, failed to find their groove this time around. The Cowboys have lost nine games while winning only seven with a home record of 2-6. Unsurprisingly, they were eliminated from the playoff contention in Week 16 – their first miss since 2020.
Mike McCarthy, who joined the ranks of the Jerry Jones’ team in 2020, has been inculpated for the playoff losses and postseason troubles. In 2021 and 2023, the Cowboys failed to make it out of the wild card losing in what could have been easy wins.
In 2022, the Cowboys defeated the Tampa Bay Buccanneers in the Wild Card round, only to find their season for the second time at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers. Adding the 2024 playoff miss and poor season amid a massive injury for the leading quarterback, Mike McCarthy has been under great pressure from the fans.
McCarthy, who was backed by Jerry Jones for a contract extension, kept his silence about his job future. McCarthy responded that he has a different vision on his plate, via Jon Machota of NY Times.

The team now faces a pivotal decision: General Manager Jerry Jones, who holds ultimate authority, must evaluate the future of Head Coach Mike McCarthy. While McCarthy could choose to leave on his own terms, indications suggest he prefers to remain in Dallas. However, Jones appears open to letting McCarthy’s contract expire, allowing the coach to explore other opportunities if desired.
Jerry Jones confident in Mike McCarthy despite the poor numbers
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed his support for head coach Mike McCarthy following the team’s 7-9 record, capped by a lopsided Week 17 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
In an interview with Shan & RJ on 105.3 The Fan, Jones indicated that he feels good about Mike McCarthy and the season that the Cowboys had. He acknowledged that he doesn’t want to keep the speculation that he doesn’t want McCarthy or the idea that he’s not considered being floated around.
Even if Mike McCarthy wants to stay and Jerry Jones approves, the Cowboys might have to face a very intensive and excruciating off-season. According to Albert Breer, a key challenge is the expiration of McCarthy’s contract, along with nearly the entire coaching staff also being out of contract. Retaining them would require a substantial financial commitment to new deals.
