Mike McCarthy may have taken in charge of his final game as the Cowboys head coach in week 18 loss but he still wants to be part of the team in the future.

The Dallas Cowboys aimed to deliver Mike McCarthy a win on the final day of the season and despite leading the Washington Commanders for majority of the time on Sunday, they ended up suffering another loss. Such has been the season for McCarthy and the Cowboys.

The Cowboys ended the season with a losing record (only the second time under McCarthy since he took over in 2020). Even though most fans would prefer to see him fired as the head coach, the 61-year-old still views himself as an ideal candidate for Jerry Jones’ Cowboys.

After the game on Sunday at Arlington, McCarthy spoke with the media and presented his case to remain as the coach of the Cowboys.

I don’t like to talk about myself. But I’ll just be clear. I’m a winner. I know how to win. I’ve won a championship. I’ve won a championship in this building. And that’s who I am. We’ll see where it goes.

Mike McCarthy said via The Athletic’s Jon Machota.

NBC’s Pat Doney spoke with Jones after the game and asked about McCarthy’s future. The veteran owner reiterated the words that he said last week.

The impact of this game (loss to Commanders) will impact his future… I said ‘No.’ All of the things I will consider [is] Hay is in the Barn.

Jerry Jone said.

Jones hardly ever gives away what goes through his head. If the last game makes zero difference in his final judgment then the result could tip either way.

Mike McCarthy’s contract with the Dallas Cowboys

Usually, Super Bowl-winning coaches earn tons of cash from their contracts unless it’s Mike McCarthy. While Andy Reid earns $18 million per year at the Kansas City Chiefs and Sean McVay makes $14 million a year at the Los Angeles Rams, McCarthy toils in the lower echelons in terms of income.

After leaving the Green Bay Packers, McCarthy signed a deal worth somewhere between $4 million and $7 million per year. Jones had the chance to give McCarthy a new deal in 2024 but opted against it. The Cowboys needed the money to pay quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and make a few free-agent signings to bolster the team.

McCarthy’s contract runs out on the 8th of January, but the Cowboys have until the 14th to negotiate a new deal with him. After that, any other team can approach him to take their coaching job. One thing is for sure: there will not be a shortage of jobs for McCarthy.
