The Miami Dolphins required a win against the New York Jets to clinch a spot in the playoffs but fell behind 6-18 at the end of the third quarter. Mike McDaniel needed all of his captains to stick together and fight until the final whistle in the fourth quarter but their main weapon in the offense was missing. Tyreek Hill was not present in the Dolphins dugout like the others.

McDaniel prepared for the first drive without the All-Pro wide receiver and quarterback Tyler Huntley set up running back De’von Achane for the Dolphins’ first of the two touchdowns in the final quarter. Miami scored again through tight end Jonnu Smith’s four-yard touchdown but the Jets killed the game off with a late pass from Aaron Rodgers to Breece Hall to finish the game 20-32.

The defeat knocked the Dolphins out while the Denver Broncos qualified over them after blowing out the top-seed Kansas City Chiefs. During the post-game presser, reporters asked Mike McDaniel about Tyreek Hill not playing in the fourth quarter. McDaniel revealed he was focused on the game but heard the 8x Pro Bowler was unavailable.

I was informed that he was unavailable, right before a drive. I was not informed that it was a new injury… there was guys on the field that were competing.

Mike McDaniel’s reaction to Tyreek Hill potentially quitting the Dolphins

While everyone was contemplating the loss to the Jets, Hill dropped a massive bomb from the locker room that he wanted to quit the team and move on.

I’m about to open up that door for myself… I’m out, bruh. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I have to do what’s best for my career. I’m too much of a competitor to just be out there.

Tyreek Hill told Kelly.

It certainly tickled a lot of pickles because the 30-year-old has several times stated that he wanted to finish his career with the Dolphins and even extended his contract until 2026. His recent social media activity even indicated that he was unhappy and even hinted that a return to the Chiefs may be on his mind.

McDaniel said matters related to Hill will be discussed in the next team meeting.

In regard to things stated second hand for me, emotions are high, especially after a game like that. There will be conversations that will be direct in the next couple of days.

Mike McDaniel said.

Hill recorded his worst season since his Super Bowl-winning campaign with the Chiefs in 2019 (he only played 12 games due to injury but made all the difference in the playoffs, scoring 2 touchdowns from 217 yards). In 2024, Hill logged 81 receptions for 959 yards and 6 touchdowns from 17 appearances.
