Mike McDaniel and Tyreek Hill still aren’t on the same page following Hill’s outburst at the end of the 2024 season.

Tyreek Hill appears to be testing the patience of the Miami Dolphins coaching staff, especially Mike McDaniel. Not too long ago, he threatened to quit the team because the season did not pan out the way he wanted it to.

Everyone saw that. Those who don’t support the Dolphins saw the way Hill prioritized himself over the team after they failed to reach the playoffs. The 31-year-old boasted a 100% playoff appearance record before the 2024 debacle.

Hill later went out of his way to apologize for his statement, but quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s words during a recent press conference clearly pointed to tension in the locker room.

Hill apparently had an epiphany listening to Tagovailoa’s jab.

I think that’s very important. I’m just holding myself accountable, man. I think Tua’s comments were needed, you know what I’m saying? He’s obviously the leader of our team, so he sets the standard.

But did Tagovailoa’s statement bring a change in Hill’s actions? His statement on running back De’Von Achane’s third-down proficiency will give an idea of what he thinks about his teammates.

Take De’Von [Achane] out on third down. What? That’s my honest opinion. If it’s third and short, he’s not a power back. I love De’Von, but if I’m being honest, that’s why you’ve got Jaylen Wright; that’s why you’ve got [Ollie] Gordon.

Achane’s reaction is enough to make anyone wonder if the Dolphins players even share a good working relationship.

McDaniel always advocates team culture and camaraderie. The Dolphins’ owner appointed McDaniel to instill discipline in the locker room. A member of Mike Shanahan‘s coaching lineage is an ideal fit for this role, and McDaniel successfully accomplished his objective.

Unfortunately, the 2024 season proved that his grip is slowly loosening over the players. Hill tops that list. Even though he’s a star on the team, a player is never bigger than the organization itself.

McDaniel knows that better than most. Despite his best efforts, the All-Pro wideout keeps behaving like a loose cannon. The statement about Achane was not a criticism of the RB but a carefully veiled dig at McDaniel, to which he had no other option but to respond.

It was genius reporting by Tyreek, seeing how we had a short-yardage period that very day. That’s exactly how we repped the backs in that short yardage period that very day but we thought it was funny that he reported the news that wasn’t news on that practice day in that short yardage period, that you guys were all there too.

This wasn’t a one-off affair. Hill confessed once on a TikTok video that he came close to hitting McDaniel during a game because he wasn’t happy with his calls.

McDaniel must take care of these loose ends before week one of the 2025 season. A team cannot function if players are not on the same page and fighting for the same cause.

They mustn’t forget that the AFC East will be very different from last year. The Patriots spent more than half of their salary cap to improve the roster, and the Jets are under new management and with a new quarterback, waiting to prove themselves.

The Bills are once again the favorites to win the division and challenge for the AFC. If the Dolphins aim to stay relevant in the East, then they must sort out their locker room issues ASAP.
